Love it when a plan comes together.
After 5 years of sourcing genetics and selecting for Feed Efficiency there's been confirmation that this bull is in the top 2% for Net Feed Intake efficiency and top 10% for the Sustainable Production Index.

Very few Herefords have achieved this.

Add in beautiful type, flawless structure, great temperament and a terrific first group of calves on the ground - there's plenty to be pleased about.

Weaning weights, docility scores, Cow weights and Body Condition scores all done and submitted in to Breedplan.

The 2025 calf crop have set new records for weight gain and weaning efficiency which now averages 48% across the herd.
Most pleasing is considering the performance of the calves with all of their Dams rebreeding on the first cycle.

Pregnancy scanning done & it's a terrific result.
31/32 scanned in calf inside the first 25 days.
80% hold to synchro AI (16/20)

This little herd of battlers get pushed extremely hard through Autumn/Winter and their ability to bounce back and rebreed immediately whilst rearing an outstanding calf is so impressive.

6 weeks until the 2025 calves get weaned & there are some real standouts.

2016 throwbacks seems to be a thing today.
Looks like it was getting fairly dry this week 10 years ago!
The conditions this week (2nd pic) are much better and the Cattle have improved a lot since 10 years ago too.

Mating 2025 is finished ✅️
Natural mating of Heifers & Cows for 45 days.
AI Cows got one return cycle.
Herd sire is 28 months and has just finished his second mating with a mob of 33 Cows & Heifers, has gained condition, and is already eyeing up the neighbours for more work!

When I bought this place 13 years ago I took over 12ha of native bush in a really shocking state with intense grazing by sheep and wild deer, and the trees smothered & choked to death by climbing vines. Thousands of hours have since been spent cutting out the vines, and on w**d & pest control.

And today the one surviving giant Rata in the centre of that bush block came in to full flower.

And what a sight it is!

AI done & dusted for another year ✅️
12 months researching & sourcing genetics to try and inch further forward.
Feed Efficiency remains the target trait and the sires used should provide more gains there without sacrificing all the other good stuff.
If the 2026 calves are to be better than the 2025 crop then they'll need to be bloody good!

Thanks to the good folk at Matariki Herefords for the opportunity to use their genetics.
