The Manawatu District with a population of over 29,000 covers an area of 2500 sq km, commonly referred to as "The Manawatu", the district is based on the town of Feilding and includes the area between the Manawatu River in the south and the Manawatu River in the north; stretching from Himatangi in the south, to Mangaweka in the north; and from the Manawatu River in the west to the summits of the R

uahine Ranges in the east. We use our social media channels to provide important risk reduction and community readiness and recovery information to the public. With strong winds and heavy rain affecting parts of our region, now is a good time to make sure you and your property are prepared.

🏑 Before the weather arrives:

πŸ”₯ If you have a burn pile, make sure it is completely extinguished. Strong winds can cause embers to reignite and spread.
πŸ’¨ Secure outdoor furniture, trampolines and other loose items that could be blown around.
🌿 Check for loose branches and keep clear of trees during strong winds.

🌧️ Clear gutters and drains where it is safe to do so.
πŸš— Take extra care on the roads and drive to the conditions.
πŸ“± Keep up to date with the latest weather warnings and follow advice from local authorities and emergency services.

🌱 As spring progresses clear dead and dry vegetation from around buildings, make sure emergency vehicles can easily access your property, ensure water supplies are available and keep spring grass growth under control

πŸƒ How quickly conditions change will depend on spring weather, including temperature, rainfall, humidity, and strong winds

🏑 Now is the time to get prepared. Review your plans, talk with your community, and take practical steps to reduce fire risk before conditions become more challenging

As the weather warms up, birds may start looking for sheltered places to build their nests πŸͺΊ including under the bonnets of cars, tractors and other machinery. πŸš—πŸšœ

Before starting a vehicle or piece of machinery that hasn’t been used for a while, take a moment to check for:

βœ”οΈ Nests, twigs, hay or other nesting material
βœ”οΈ Signs that birds may have made a home under the bonnet or around the engine
βœ”οΈ Any debris that could become a fire hazard once the engine heats up πŸ”₯

πŸš’πŸŒ³ Can We Get to You in an Emergency? πŸŒ³πŸš’

When an emergency happens, every second counts. If your property has a long driveway or private accessway, it's important to make sure our fire appliances can get to you quickly and safely.

Take a look at your driveway and check that it has:

βœ”οΈ At least 4 metres of width for emergency vehicles to pass through.
βœ”οΈ At least 4 metres of overhead clearance by trimming back overhanging trees and branches.
βœ”οΈ A clear path, free from parked vehicles, trailers, bins, or other obstacles.
βœ”οΈ Gates that can be opened easily and provide enough space for a fire appliance to enter.

🌿 Overgrown trees and narrow driveways can delay emergency crews when every minute matters.

A little maintenance today could make a big difference in an emergency.

πŸ”₯🏑 Is Your Chimney Ready for Winter? 🏑πŸ”₯

Before lighting your fireplace for the first time this season, make sure your chimney has been cleaned and checked. A build-up of soot and creosote can increase the risk of a dangerous chimney fire.

πŸš’ Remember:
βœ”οΈ Have your chimney cleaned before the first fire of the season
βœ”οΈ Use only dry, seasoned firewood
βœ”οΈ Keep the area around your fireplace clear of anything that can burn

⚠️ If you notice smoke coming back into your home instead of going up the chimney, or your fire isn't drawing properly, stop using the fireplace until the chimney has been inspected. These could be signs of a blockage or other issue that needs attention.

A clean chimney means a safer, warmer winter for you and your whānau. β„οΈπŸ’™
