A great weekend at the Otago Centre Dog Trial Championships! 🐑🐕

Last weekend both Michael and Henry competed at the Otago Centre Dog Trial Champs, and we’re incredibly proud of how they both performed.

Henry qualified 1st for the Zig Zag run-offs with his dog Trix, while Michael qualified Maia for the Straight run-offs and Ernie for the Zig Zag run-offs.
After a strong set of finals runs the results finished up with:

• Michael – 2nd in the Straight with Maia
• Michael – 5th in the Zig Zag with Ernie
• Henry – 1st in the Zig Zag with Trix 🥇

A massive congratulations to Henry Smith for another outstanding run with Trix to take out the Zig Zag title 🥳

Winning — or even placing — at this level is no easy feat. While a little luck on the day never hurts, success in dog trials largely comes down to reading the sheep and the course, the training of the dog, and the dog’s natural style and ability. Behind every result are many, many hours of training and dedication. A huge congrats to all other competitors and place getters on the day.

We are enormously proud of both Michael and Henry for such a great result.

Safe to say, the cadets are in very good hands learning the craft of working dogs from two very capable handlers. 👏

🐑✂️ Southern Shears 2026 ✂️🐑

Yesterday, Jake and Noah, our two 2nd Year Cadets, entered the Southern Shears shearing competition in the Novice section – their very first competition!

Shearing competitions are judged on speed, style and faults, so it’s not just about getting the job done quickly – it’s about technique, precision and stock handling as well.

To step into that environment for the first time takes courage. There are spectators, judges, other shearers watching… and the pressure is real. But they backed themselves and gave it a crack.

And the results?
👏 4th place for Jake Anderson
👏 6th place for Noah Monson

We are incredibly proud. Not just of the placings – but of the willingness to enter, to push themselves outside their comfort zones, to work hard and see that effort reflected in the results.

A special mention to Henry Smith who entered the Intermediate section himself. It was awesome to see him go along, compete, and set the example. That kind of leadership matters. Showing the boys what it looks like to keep challenging yourself and striving to improve is powerful.

And they’re not slowing down — today they’re at it again at the Waikaia Dog Trials, continuing to put themselves out there and give it a go. Both Michael and Henry are there in support, offering encouragement, advice and guidance.

This is what the cadet programme is about – growth, skill development, confidence, backing yourself and giving opportunities a go.

🌱 Join the Jeff Farm Team – Head Shepherd Opportunity 🌱

An exciting opportunity has opened up at Jeff Farm as our current Head Shepherd, Caleb, moves on to a Stock Manager role — a step up he has earned during his 18 months with us.

When Caleb joined Jeff Farm, he stepped up quickly and took on significant operational responsibility. During his time here, he also completed the Beef + Lamb Generation Next programme — something we are proud to support our team through.

At Jeff Farm, we are passionate about developing people and helping fast-track farming careers. If you’re wanting to grow your experience managing stock at scale, build leadership capability, and be part of a supportive, hardworking (and fun!) team — this could be the role for you.

Here we go again… another lap around the farming calendar 🌱

On Monday we officially kicked off Jeff Farm 2026 and welcomed three new cadets into the fold:

• Ollie Walker-Leach – Lake Hayes
• Lilly McQueen – Temuka
• James Read – Oamaru

They were thrown straight into it from day one – weighing lambs, sorting deer, weighing cattle, crutching, dipping, topping on the tractor and lots of fencing – and each cadet has also been matched with their first heading pup - with care, handling and foundations starting immediately.

They’ve settled in so well already and shown great attitudes in what has been a big first week. We’re really excited to walk this year alongside them and see how they grow, learn, and find their feet over the coming months.

Welcome to Jeff Farm, Ollie, Lilly and James – we’re so glad to have you here 💛

One of Noah’s better passes 😉 and Sam does the rest 🙌
When you pass it out to the girls, good things happen.

No Women No Try – 2025 Touch Season 🏉

Big love to “No Women No Try" (Yea the Girls) — a team held together by good banter, sore legs, and a lot of heart.

💥 Jazz Smith & Camryn Scott — the absolute backbone of the team. Reliable, relentless, and always showing up 🎖

🏉 Noah Monson — playmaker energy… passing drills pencilled in for next season though 😝

🏆 Ben Fifield — self-declared MVP (and we’ll let him have it)

📦 Gavin Perkin — operating out of high box (occasionally known as the low box 😆).

🤕 Jake Anderson — battled injury all season and still fronted every time. Tough as nails

🐊 Henry Smith — brought a whole new meaning to “sports mode”, famously playing a half in Crocs. Iconic.

🔥 Michael Benton — 🤭 but still quick enough to keep the young fellas honest.

🏃 Josh Gibson — the black sheep of the team, who somehow goes from tractor seat to full-field sprint like it’s nothing.

🙌 Caleb Jones — always first to suggest pre and post-game team bonding (you know what we mean 😉).

💛 Maisie — pregnant, sidelined, but still our #1 supporter on the sidelines.

And huge thanks to our legends who jumped in when we needed extra numbers:
✨ Sam Mason
✨️Louie Adams and Jack Cochrane — once a cadet, always a cadet.
