Last week, some of Aotearoa’s most talented chefs went head-to-head in the 2026 Monteith’s Wild Food Challenge final, serving up incredible dishes inspired by the wild.

For the second year running, The Smoking Barrel has taken out the Monteith's Wild Food Challenge title!

After a live head-to-head cook off between five of Aotearoa's most talented venues, we're proud to crown The Smoking Barrel as the winner of the 2026 Monteith's Wild Food Challenge, selected by our expert judging panel of Sam in the Wild, Emily Lucas & Jeremy Wells.

Their dish, 'Forest to The Sea Wild Tasting Board' paired with the Monteiths Driftin' IPA impressed the judges with its creativity, flavour and celebration of wild New Zealand ingredients.

The Monteith’s Wild Food Challenge Finalists for 2026 are here! 🏆

After weeks of wild flavours, creative pairings and thousands of votes, five standout dishes have earned their place in the final. On 18 June, they'll go head-to-head for the title of Monteith’s Wild Food Challenge Champion 2026.

The finalists are:

🦌 Forest to The Sea Wild Tasting Board - The Smoking Barrel
A wild culinary journey featuring 10-hour BBQ smoked wild venison short rib, local kiwifruit, feijoa & horopito glaze, wild foraged mushrooms, wild pork, yellowfoot pāua, whipped kina & kawakawa butter and kina mayo. Matched with Monteith's Driftin’ IPA.

🍔 G.O.A.T. Burger - The Keg Room
Spiced wild goat with whipped feta, mango chutney & pakoras, matched with Monteith's West Coastin' Hazy IPA.

🍔 Cedric's Wild Food Sliders - Shed 16
Canterbury red stag venison with smoked horopito pork fat, blueberry & mānuka relish, kawakawa aioli, watercress and kūmara crisps, matched with Monteith's Original Ale.

🐐 Tahr Mate The Lookout Bar and Kitchen
Tahr three ways with spring roll, tataki & pressed shoulder, matched with Monteith's Original Ale.

🍽️ Foveaux Strait Blackfoot Pāua Arancini Aparima Restaurant & Bar
Golden-crisp risotto spheres featuring wild-caught blackfoot pāua from the pristine waters of the Foveaux Strait, served with black garlic aioli and tomato kasundi. Matched with Monteith's Alcoholic Ginger Beer.

The Wild Food Challenge is nearly wrapped up, which means there's still time to head into your local, try a wild dish & cast your vote.

Venues across Aotearoa have been going head-to-head all month long and it's still up to you to help decide who takes out the top 5 and proceeds to the national final!

In the heart of Greytown, The White Swan is serving up a true taste of the backcountry 🔥

Their Wild Food Challenge entry, Wairarapa Backcountry Braise, features long-braised nanny goat shoulder pulled straight from the bone, with root cellar parsnip and carrot, golden confit potatoes, wild horopito spice, toasted hazelnut and herb gremolata, all served with flame-charred sourdough.

Paired with a Monteith's Radler, this dish brings rich, rustic flavour with a crisp, easy finish.

Head into The White Swan to try it for yourself, then cast your vote!

Down in beautiful Wanaka, Amigos is serving up a wild one 🦌 🍊

Their Wild Food Challenge entry, Venado Naranja, features tequila and orange cured venison Denver leg on a tostada with goat's chevre, watermelon and mint salad, finished with a juniper and cocoa dressing. Matched with a Monteith's Crushed Apple Cider.
