Askerne Winery Award winning, hand crafted wines from a single estate Hawkes Bay, NZ The sub soils vary from gravels, red-metal and clay.

Askerne Estate winery commenced in April 1993 when wine lovers John and Kathryn Loughlin purchased the original 11.6 hectares site in Te Mata Mangateretere Road. John and Kathryn had studied winemaking and viticulture in the previous years with Kathryn, as the more diligent student, achieving the higher grades. They called the property Askerne, being the olde English name of Kathryn’s birthplace, Askern in Yorkshire, England.
\The Askerne Estate Winery vineyard site comprises six different soils varying between river gravels, sandy soils, silt and loams. These various soils have been matched to particular varieties and also to produce complexity within varietal styles these include The site allows us to grow a wide range of varities, currently planted – Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, Semillon, Chardonnay, Viognier, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir, Barbera, Carmenere, Mourvedre, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot. We also provide a build your own picnic service where you can put together your own combination from our selection of gourmet foods with one of our award-winning wines for a picnic in our idyllic vineyard setting.

What a great night at the Hawke’s Bay W**e Awards!

We’re delighted to have taken home the Sweet W**e Trophy for our 2025 Late Harvest Gewürztraminer.

A huge amount of work from both our vineyard and w**ery teams went into producing this w**e, so it’s fantastic to see their efforts recognised.

A big congratulations to all the other award winners too. It was a wonderful evening celebrating the quality, diversity and people behind Hawke’s Bay w**e. 🥂

Wow, what a weekend of results for Askerne w**e! 🍾

We’re thrilled to have picked up 5 Gold medals across three w**es over the weekend!

Our 2025 Reserve Chardonnay and 2025 Viognier both received Gold at NZIWS and the National W**e Awards of Aotearoa, while our 2025 Reserve Gewürztraminer also took home Gold at the National W**e Awards of Aotearoa.

We’re especially pleased to see such consistency across the competitions so far this year! A fantastic reflection of the w**es coming out of the vineyard.
