Askerne Winery Award winning, hand crafted wines from a single estate Hawkes Bay, NZ The sub soils vary from gravels, red-metal and clay.

Askerne Estate winery commenced in April 1993 when wine lovers John and Kathryn Loughlin purchased the original 11.6 hectares site in Te Mata Mangateretere Road. John and Kathryn had studied winemaking and viticulture in the previous years with Kathryn, as the more diligent student, achieving the higher grades. They called the property Askerne, being the olde English name of Kathryn’s birthplace,

Askern in Yorkshire, England.
\The Askerne Estate Winery vineyard site comprises six different soils varying between river gravels, sandy soils, silt and loams. These various soils have been matched to particular varieties and also to produce complexity within varietal styles these include The site allows us to grow a wide range of varities, currently planted – Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, Semillon, Chardonnay, Viognier, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir, Barbera, Carmenere, Mourvedre, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot. We also provide a build your own picnic service where you can put together your own combination from our selection of gourmet foods with one of our award-winning wines for a picnic in our idyllic vineyard setting.

Have you read the September edition of Cuisine yet?

We’re pretty excited to see our 2024 Askerne Estate Chardonnay featured in Cuisine’s Chardonnay tasting, coming in 4th with an impressive 4.5 stars and a Best Buy!

Sadly, we’ve now sold through our own stock of the 2024 vintage, but there are still a few bottles hiding out with some of our retailers. If you’ve been wanting to try it, get in quick. Once it’s gone, it’s gone!

And if you’re looking for the next vintage, our 2025 Estate Chardonnay has now been released and is drinking beautifully. 🥂

A new vintage, but the same Askerne Chardonnay character we think it’s well worth a try!

We have some very exciting news… The Beat Girls are coming back to Askerne!

One of the questions we’ve been asked so many times over the years is:

“When are you having The Beat Girls again?”

Well… the answer is this summer!

With some recent changes around the vineyard, we’ve found the perfect spot to create a little concert area and we couldn’t think of a better way to christen it than by bringing back one of our favourite acts.

And there’s even more reason to celebrate - 2026 marks 30 years since the Askerne Cellar Door first opened! 🍾

So, get ready for an evening of great wine, great music and a whole lot of nostalgia as we welcome The Beat Girls back to Askerne.
