We are a boutique vineyard just five minutes from the Village of Havelock North in Hawke's Bay Wine Country. Our focus is on premium Bordeaux styled red varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. All our wines are Estate Grown and the fruit is hand picked. With just over 25 acres many of our wines are available only through the cellar door and this website. Our elevated north

facing site on the lower slopes of the Te Mata hills is not only an excellent location for grape growing it also provides us with stunning views, a warm sheltered micro-climate and a perfect situation for the visitor to spend an hour or two, a night or two or even a week or two. You can taste our wines, have lunch at the Bistro, a Summer Saturday morning at the Grower's Market and art gallery, an evening at a concert in the amphitheatre or all of the above by staying in one of our properties. Because we are not large, we are very keen on building a relationship with the person who consumes our wine. This is why we encourage people into Hawkes Bay and into our vineyard. While a virtual visit is OK, nothing can replace the experience of actually being here. We are open seven days and we welcome a call or a visit some time soon.

The best winter afternoons usually start with the same thought:

“We’ll just sit here for a minute.”

A few hours later, not much has changed.

And in a world that seems determined to keep everyone busy, that can feel surprisingly luxurious.

Not every couple dreams of a wedding with 120 guests.

For some, the dream is much smaller.

A few people they couldn’t imagine doing it without.

A beautiful place. A long lunch afterwards. And enough space to actually remember the day.

Sometimes the most meaningful celebrations are the ones that leave everything unnecessary behind.

If that sounds a little like your idea of a wedding day, you’ll find more about Black Barn Elopements via the link in our bio.

Winter has a publicist problem.

Summer gets all the attention. The vineyard lunches. The concerts. The long evenings that somehow turn into longer evenings.

Winter, meanwhile, is left trying to explain itself.

Which is a shame, because Hawke's Bay in winter is arguably when the region starts making the most sense.

The roads are quieter. The pace drops a notch. Lunch stretches a little longer because nobody is in a hurry to be somewhere else. A bottle of red feels more appropriate. So does booking an extra night.

At Black Barn, winter tends to shift the focus from doing things to being together.

The kitchen becomes the centre of the house. Someone puts a playlist on. Someone else opens a bottle. Plans become loose. Conversations become longer.

The funny thing is that many of the people who stay with us in winter arrive expecting a getaway and leave talking about the time they spent with each other.

Perhaps that's why so many return.

Winter isn't summer with less sunshine.

It's a different experience entirely.

And for those who know what they're looking for, it might just be the better one.

The Mediterranean diet gets a lot of credit for healthy ageing.

Now, Italian researchers are suggesting moderate wine consumption within that lifestyle may help delay ageing in men too.

Convenient news for the gentlemen.

Hawke’s Bay isn’t doing a bad impression either:
vineyards, olive oil, seasonal produce, long lunches and a glass of red in the evening sun.

We’ll leave the science to them.

We’ll stick to good wine, long lunches and people worth opening another bottle with.

Some studies are easier to get behind than others.

You don’t often hear musicians from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra from just a few metres away, glass of wine in hand.

On Wednesday 10 June, the Black Barn Winter Series continues with an intimate evening of music, dinner and storytelling through oboe, clarinet and bassoon, each bringing its own character to the world of Romeo & Juliet.

Performed by three NZSO musicians, the evening moves from Mozart through to French composers Darius Milhaud and Georges Auric, spanning more than 170 years of music exploring romance, melancholy, tension and conflict.

Set across a relaxed two-course dinner in the Bistro.

$129 per person.
Seats are limited.
