Something new on the roadside stall this week ๐Ÿฅ”๐Ÿฅ•

Weโ€™ve teamed up again this season with Edwin and his whฤnau at Imbizi Farm in Otautau, and their spray-free potatoes and carrots are now on the stall.

Edwinโ€™s whanau farm the way we like to: community first and sustainability always. Theyโ€™re about feeding people, not just selling. They look after the whenua so it stays fertile and productive for generations to come.

Grown just down the road in Otautau and dug for eating, not shipping.
Swing by the stall at #84 Tokanui-Gorge Road Hwy.

The first strawberries of the season are in! ๐Ÿ“

We picked them this morning, still warm from the sun. Red right through and properly sweet, the way homegrown strawberries should be.

This first bowl is going to our whฤnau. They've been checking the plants every day, waiting for the first ripe ones, so it's only fair they get first taste.

The plants are covered in flowers and green fruit, so there's plenty more on the way. Follow our page, and we'll let you know when they're on our roadside stall and at the Southern Farmers Market on Sundays.

Winter's been kind to our strawberry plants ๐Ÿ“

They've been growing away quietly all through the cold months, and now they're strong, healthy, and ready for their new beds. They're Albion, a great cropper that does well here in Murihiku. Get them in the ground this spring, and you'll be picking your own fruit come summer.

Picture this: a warm summer's day, you pop out to the garden and pick a strawberry that's still sweet and warm from the sun. Nothing from the shop comes close.

We'll have them at the Southern Farmers Market this Sunday, 27 September, 9:30amโ€“1:30pm. They're $5 for a punnet of 2 plants.

Come and see us at the Railway Station, 2 Leven Street.

We'll be at the Southern Farmers Market this Sunday, 27th September, with Albion Strawberry Plants. They're great for Murihiku growing conditions! Delicious popping out to your own patch on a summer's day to pick them fresh, sweet and still warm from the sun ๐Ÿ˜‹

New Season Strawberries!! Yay!! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

Even growers need to shop local sometimes.

Our own gardens are between seasons right now, so on Sunday we were doing the rounds at the Southern Farmers Market.

That's the thing about a farm-to-table model. When it's not our turn to supply, someone else's kai is ready to go, fresher, better tasting, and more nutritious than anything that's spent days in transit, because it's come straight from a Murihiku grower to our table.

Worth a watch. "The Economics of Eating" looks at how our food systems work and why growing and buying local matters more than ever. Close to home for us, and food for thought next time you're picking up your veges.

Nothing goes to waste at Greenyard Veges

Our chillies came in thick and fast this season, so rather than let any go soft in the fridge, we turned the last of the harvest into homemade sweet chilli sauce.

Gretta was on sauce duty and did everything by the book. Deseeded carefully. Chopped carefully. Washed her hands like she was scrubbing in for surgery. Less than 10 minutes later, she blew her nose with a tissue, completely unaware her hands were still armed and dangerous. Mouth and nose burst into flames almost instantly. Turns out chilli oil doesn't care how careful you were three steps ago.

The sauce itself, thankfully, came out perfect. Rich, glossy, packed with flavour, and bottled up ready for the pantry. Just don't ask Gretta to make the next batch without gloves, a face shield, and possibly a hazmat suit.

Yum!
