⭐️ New Season Update ⭐️

As the new season approaches, I have started receiving number of awesome enquiries regarding fertile eggs, chicks, and pullets. To keep things simple and fair, my rule remains the same:

Short answer:
I do not take or maintain waiting lists.

Long answer:
1. Mother Nature is the boss here! Breeding poultry rarely goes by the book, and there are always unpredictable variables from fertility drops to snap weather changes, feed quality and so many more. I simply do not want to promise or make you wait for something I do not physically have in my hands yet.

2. Being in the Southland, our unpredictable weather means our breeding season sometimes begins a bit later than other areas of NZ. You will often see eggs, chicks and other chooks available elsewhere before mine are ready, and if you choose to buy from another breeder, that is absolutely ok. I often have plenty of amazing breeders I can recommend who I have met through our local poultry club and the poultry shows I have attended.

3. I manage TO+C on my own, outside of my work hours, children’s sports and family activities. While I often say ‘we’, that is because my family are involved in some way, shape or form and I feel they deserve recognition for their efforts.

4. Managing approx 10 breeding groups makes tracking individual message requests impossible, I do try my best, but it is usually the first person available and arrives when I can fit you in our busy family schedule gets the prize.

🐥 Chicks & Pullets 🐤

When I have a good supply of quality eggs, I do a few batches of eggs in the incubator. Once the eggs and chicks are hatching well and fertility is high, I will advertise what I have available.

All chicks are initially offered as unsexed day olds, and I don’t hold back chicks for the pullet market. What chicks are advertised as available, are what I am not keeping for myself as potential showing and/or breeding. I usually pick a colour or 2 to focus on for myself for the season.

Any unsold dayolds will be raised by me, meaning I cannot predict exactly what, when, or how many older pullets I will have available later. You will simply be able to pick from what I have listed as available.

As for advertising, I choose to pour my energy into caring for my flock, my own page and my page followers. If there isn’t much interest after 12-24 hours I usually post to the open market like Trade Me or Poultry pages and on the odd occasion someone may contact me with a very well timed message.

I am so incredibly grateful to be kept busy by repeat loyal followers who often return multiple times every season, and the new ones who find Tisbury Orpingtons + Co through word of mouth. Mr TO+C will often say I love my chooks more than anything else 😅.

As always, thank you for your continuous support and understanding. After our final Poultry Show in mid July I will post up my plan for the breeding season so you all are up to date.

P.S - if you have poultry related questions or needing advice, I am by no means an expert but I am always willing to help where I can and give advice from my own experiences 😊.

Been a bit quiet on the chook front of late. We are battling with the mud which makes sorting birds for showing a bit difficult as we’re a bit short on dry space! However, some prep has been made towards the next show at the start of July. I wish I could have got to a few others through June but I’m lucky to have made it to the few I have.

My chook is back home after its vacation in Dunedin 😅. I’ve pulled the birds I’m thinking of taking for the next show and separated them. We will start their prep with some extra handling and cage training. Though being hand raised they’re not too bad at being handled thankfully.

🎪🎪 Dunedin Show Results 🎪🎪

What a cool weekend we had in Dunedin, there were some awesome birds on display. Met some great people and made new connections. Had some wins, some losses and a couple of surprises (and a poor bird left behind in the chaos but he’s having a wee holiday with Gary at Oceanview Farm for the week). Plus the youngest member of TO+C competing in the Youth Showmanship with his favourite pekin and impressing older hands of poultry with his handling skills, knowledge and personality.

We entered 15 chooks, took 14 as I decided last minute one wasn’t where I wanted it to be, came home with 17 chooks 🙈!

🌟 Dunedin Show this weekend 🌟

Oh, she’s been a rough week getting ready for this show! I’ve been quite unwell after picking up whatever lurgies the smallest member of TO+C brought home from school last week so prep has been a bit slow this week. Thankfully, all the major washing has been done, it’s just matter of going over the chooks now so when we travel on Friday that it’s nothing too major when they get penned for the weekend.

Taking a couple extra this time, a couple extra pekins and a couple extra orpingtons, one of the black araucanas is staying home as she was struggling with the confinements of being a show chook. My old splash Orpington hen (photos below) looked less than impressed when she realised it was bath time.

The smallest TO+C member is having a crack at the Youth Showmanship class and has been practising his handling of his favourite pekin.

Looks to be another super competitive Black Orpington Pullet class so will be interesting to see how those results go, the awesome Brian Glassey is the judge again of the heavy breed section so looking forward to what he thinks of the Orpington’s this season.

The chooks are in Milton! Well except my blue Orpington cockerel who had a wee case of bumblefoot and it hasn’t quite healed enough for my liking. I didn’t have time to take photos or fully prep the chooks to the standard I normally would. I was hoping to be in Milton by 5pm, back on the road home for Saturday morning sports by 6-6:30pm but the chooks had other ideas. They’ve made me work for it and I still couldn’t get them 100% 😅. We didn’t arrive until closer to 6pm due to fog and some very slow moving vehicles and then didn’t leave Milton until closer to 7:30pm and by then it was absolutely bucketing down or extremely foggy! But we made it home for Saturday morning rugby.

We’ll be back up Sunday morning to have a gander round the show and see the results. Before collecting birds and heading home in prep of the next show!

This is Peaches, pretty sure she identifies as a duck 🦆! She was pretty content just having a float in her bath.

All the chooks have now had their big wash, the last are having a blow dry in the bathroom with the fan heater. Hopefully no one needs another wash!

🎪 IT’S SHOW SEASON 🎪

Holy moly it has been a huge couple of weeks here at TO+C. We’ve mixed and poured concrete, constructed a shed, made transport/show cages and I’m currently doing the wash, primp and preen of the first lots of chooks going to the Milton show this coming weekend.

It’s a bit of a test of the waters as some of my chooks are still looking a bit scraggly after their moult and some of the pullets I didn’t get out of the pens in time before they became the cockerels girlfriends!

Mr TO+C has been outdoing himself with getting things done and set up for me. Without him I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be showing!

I’ve got some war wounds from washing the chooks, the pullets aren’t too keen for a start 😅. They look a bit like drowned rats but have the old fan heater on so they get a blow dry in the crate.

If you’re anywhere near Milton, come along to the show. It’s on Saturday and Sunday at the town hall from (I think) approx 10am-5pm Saturday and 9am-2pm.

🐥🐥 Cockerels and Pullets Available 🐥🐥

I have 9 black Orpington cockerels 9-10 weeks old, 2 are showing great breeding potential, the rest would be good garden ornaments or hen protectors. All a good size. $10 each or take the lot for $60.

All pullets are now sold pending payment and pickup.

Must have suitable cage, crate or sturdy ventilated for transport. Preferably no holds. Message us for details.

It’s a couple weeks away from the start of the Poultry, Cage Bird and Pigeon Show Season. I’ve made plans to attend 4 shows, there were 2 others I would have liked to have been able to get to as they have some South Island titles I’d like to have a crack at but with fuel costs plus allowing time off work it just isn’t feasible.

I’ve been out with the chooks working out who’s in the best condition, shape and meets the breed standard as well while battling the mud!

Mr TO+C is currently out getting cement in preparation for the new 8x10 chicken shed, he wants his garage back, so that’ll be exciting! I’ve been busy cleaning out brooders and cages readying myself for the mega wash of the chooks for showing.

Few pics of this season hatches, couple of my mates who like to hog the camera but I am pretty excited for the lavender cuckoos, they’re looking spectacular.
