What follows winter feed needs to do more than simply fill the paddock.

For some Canterbury growers, malting barley can provide a strong follow-on option, while adding another end-user market to the mix. There is also potential to generate value from both the grain and the straw.

But earning a place in the rotation still comes down to performance. Selecting the right cultivar and carefully managing nitrogen are important when aiming to meet malting specifications while maintaining profitable yields.

This season’s cultivar options include RGT Planet, SY Transformer, Tavern and Laureate.

Talk to the PGG Wrightson Grain team about whether it stacks up for your system.

Our team has been busy near Methven, getting the first of the spring drilling underway with our spring wheat trials. This site will host both the CPT trial and our own internal yield trials, adding up to more than 300 plots.

Over the coming months, these trials will help build valuable insights into variety performance and yield potential, with plenty of data to uncover along the way. Here's to a productive season ahead and the first seeds of spring going into the ground!

We're proud to support Meet the Need and the incredible work they do to help feed Kiwi families experiencing food insecurity.
Their newly released 2025/26 Impact Report highlights what's possible when farmers, businesses, foodbanks and communities come together:
🥛🍽️ 1,277,241 nutritious mince and milk meals delivered this year
💚 148 foodbanks supported across Aotearoa
🎉 More than 4.2 million meals delivered since 2020
While these milestones are worth celebrating, the need continues to grow. More New Zealand families are experiencing food insecurity than ever before, with many seeking support for the first time.
We're honoured to play a small part in helping ensure more families have access to nutritious protein when they need it most.
Congratulations to the Meet the Need team and everyone involved in this incredible collective effort. We look forward to continuing this important mahi together.

Our R&D team has spent the start of August deep nitrogen testing autumn-sown cereal trials right across Canterbury. By measuring nitrogen reserves deep in the soil profile, we're building a better understanding of crop nutrient requirements and how to maximise yield potential through the season.

It's all part of our commitment to generating local data that helps growers make informed decisions in the paddock.

The PGW Grain team wrapped up July by drilling a barley sowing date trial at Kimihia, putting two cultivars to the test across different planting timings.

Good research starts with good establishment. We'll be following these crops closely to help build a better understanding of how sowing date can influence crop performance through the season.

“You wouldn’t normally be in a position to release so many new options at once, but the programme has reached maturity, where the pipeline is very full, with many exciting potential new cultivars."

Our PGG Wrightson Grain Product Development Manager, Nick Brooks, talks about how the past couple of years have been both exciting and very rewarding for the PGG Wrightson Grain team, with new products such as a new winter feed wheat Skybolt; new feed grain triticale Ristretto; and new premium milling wheat Aston.
