Umami-Ya Essence of Deliciousness - Mahia based Japanese cuisine Food has always been central for us. This is our new adventure in a beautiful environment.

Our background is in hospitality and previously had a food trailer in Gisborne. We love to source our ingredients based on ideas of sustainability, local and organic when possible. We have brought our Free Range family on a World trip starting in Mahia … we loved it so much that we stayed. Biki left Japan 20 years ago and has missed his Mum’s cooking ever since. Her flavours inspired him to become

a Chef and now we are excited to share them with you. Our family to yours. Umami means “Essence of Deliciousness” and Ya means Shop in Japanese. In the recent years Umami is also described at the 5th Taste.
