Kia ora Everyone! We were delighted to sneak into another Dunedin gem. Quick Brown Fox and their very delicious coffee liqueurs. Made using 4 different coffee beans from all the exotic places, then heavy roasted to enhance flavours. A pinch of cinnamon further lifts the aromatics. The Flat White is a firm favourite due to its Baileys plus coffee note. Two cubes of ice and a measure makes an ideal post meal rumination. They also have a premix espresso Martini - no more measuring! Great for amateurs to get a handle on balance and shake times! Matt had decided that the walk up the Worlds Steepest Street may have been best executed after the tasting. Cheers!

Kia ora Everyone, we were absolutely blown away by our visit to Sandymount Distillery.
Richard Wilson kicked off in 2021 after finding two key elements: spring water and native flora. Then, being a no nonsense chap, went about replanting bare land with natives he can use in his very good Te Kouka Forrest Gin, He also has nice individualistic sense of self, which lead him to use solar panels to power his stills. This culminated in 2023 with the distillery being certified Carbon Neutral. The range is voluminous- part of his forever curious nature is trying new recipes and affording staff an opportunity to come up with different styles and characters. Overall the range hits all the right notes and we always keen to see what's new. Very pleased to see smaller format bottles which allow new customers a fiscally responsible inroad into new tastes. We are looking forward to the new bottles for the Noir Brandy and Tide Single Malt Whisky. Gotta love Richard's Still named after Judy Bailey.

Kia ora Everyone! Following our South Island Field Trip, we have been dispatched to reconnoiter Martinborough’s spectacular Cellar Doors. Matt couldn’t join us as he’s currently exploring Vietnams rich and diverse history, one roadside bar at a time. So, Miss Brown subbed in, and off we tootled to Palliser Wine for a midweek Tasting and Lunch. Our tasting was with the naturally ebullient Neil Bennett, who calmly lead us through a comprehensive tasting and naughtily added an extra wine, as one of us asked annoyingly technical questions..Mr Bennett handled this with very professional aplomb. We traversed 2 sparkling wines- dry, crisp, very different to each other- my favourite is The Rose. Pitch perfect. The Pinot Gris - delicate, pear drop and very well balanced. A Sauvignon Blanc- expressive, stylish without an overt Marlborough blast of sugar and acid. Nicely handled with 10% old oak maturation to assist the texture. 2 Chardonnays that demonstrate Guy McMasters skills in making these wines for aging, nice now and will grow and develop very, very well. A Pinot Noir duo from different harvests demonstrated how weather dictates the majority of characters and flavours - worth the experience to try both, with a small pinot Lucid chocolate which makes the 2023 sing. A limited release Syrah rounded out the tasting with a bright, focussed palate. Lunch followed, where upon Miss Brown devoured a Lamb Rack with a satisfying gusto, I deferred to the Burrata (delicate, with a most excellent salsa verde) and the Sopapillas (delightful treats from Chef Norka’s grandmother). Excellent fresh flavours and textures. Overall, a classy and quality focussed cellar door and restaurant. This would be a great place to introduce newcomers to the flavours and style of Martinborough. Because the exemplary service was matched with stylish, focussed wines which enhanced the expressive, fresh food, the entire package equals a place to enhance your reputation by encouraging people to go there..

Kia ora Everyone! Today is International Pinot Noir Day. We have more than 50 Martinborough and Wairarapa Pinot Noirs available right now in the Merchants and online. Each one of the wines started life as a bunch of grapes, carefully nurtured by skilled growers and viticultural staff. For roughly a year it was placed in tanks and barrels, left alone after a tumultuous fermentation. Then gently poured into a bottle for you to enjoy. Rock on up, we’re open daily from 930am. Cheers!

Kia ora Everyone! Now, I need you all to not tell anyone that we have our allocation of a particular winemaker. Try to keep this to yourself. If possible. In fact, forget you saw this, scroll on to other deep dives into sardines, upscaling Ikea furniture, random goat videos, and how to make the most delicious dhal. If you know what I think you know, then email [email protected] and put the name of the winemaker in the subject line.
We will email all past clients in the first tranche, then all new members of the tribe in subsequent tranches. Strictly limited bottle availability, and we do have some incredibly worthy stablemates. Stay tuned.

Kia ora Everyone! Treasures from an Unknown Cellar! First customer this morning was an ex South Australian Prince bearing a treasure trove of vinous and spirituous diamonds. We placed these on a barrel by the counter and are available for purchase - as 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Hospice Wairarapa - Masterton Shop . These are for sale on an offer basis over $10. No holds, no guarantees, First come, first served. Finally - we have a 12 bottle case of KWV Paarl Cabernet. We tried the thirteenth bottle - still alive, distinctly Cabernet from a warm climate - 'Could be from Australia!' chuffed Larry. Ideal for a dinner sometime soon. And look - a rare in the wild sighting a of Mateus Rose. Ohhhhhh!

Kia ora Everyone! Notes from the South Island Tour continued. Day 3, Part 2. We left Two Paddocks after Matt found a picture of his political hero and considered making an offer. We zipped across Clyde and arrived at Monte Christo WineryNot a cigar in sight. Or a Count for that matter. Historically, a very important place. Jean Desire Feraud built the winery in 1864, he was a gold prospector and, being from Provence in France, grew grapes as a natural part of his garden. Over 150 years later the property was developed by the Paris family - patriarch Stanley bring a child of Otago and one of his sons, Nicholas, having a Master of Wine qualification. The winemaker is Karl Coombes, a very measured and thoughtful winemaker, not given to spur of the moment rashness. Hence the wines are very precise, clear as a bell and fruit forward that will sit very comfortably in a cellar to age with grace. Each sub regional Pinot Noir label- Alexandra, Bannockburn and Pisa - display the subtle differences of each site. Similar to Valli Wine Wines, but a little more restrained. Tense and excitedly nervous. They have a formal tasting room dug into a small hill- very nice. There is an exceptionally gorgeous tasting area, complete with bar, and a nice little funky food truck called Fitzy. Check out the pillars of terroir in the tasting room that offers an insight into what the vines have to draw on when looking after their progeny.
Open to the public, I would book a tasting and possible winery tour.
Many thanks to Craig Biggs and the most excellent Sam Woods for the tasting and insights. Very nice to burrow down into a specific topic and get fulsome, expert answers.

Kia ora Everyone! The main bridge into Martinborough is open! This means no contemplating alternative water crossing activities, as pictured*.
No deluges forecast for the foreseeable future, meteorologically speaking. Rock on up, we are open all weekend from 9:30am.
* this is a rare photo of a Mr.William Raynor, who decided, with a mate, to cross Auckland Harbour on his mothers bed dressed in pyjamas. And we worry about today’s youth. See you soon!

Kia ora Everyone! That second day culminated in a very, very nice meal at Sherwood Restaurant (freshly recognised by Michelin!). Check our Instagram for a couple of photos. Day 3 had the troops decamp and head to the sprawling metropolis of Clyde. A very foggy trip through the Kawerau Gorge allowed us to stop and admire Meg and her Roaring. We then stopped to pay homage to the Clyde Dam - a tribute to man’s dominion over nature- and a slightly larger power station. The South Island does scale better than other regions. We visited Two Paddocks Wines PaddocksVineyard, home of Sam Neill and a veritable zoo of celebrity named creatures great and small. Had a lovely tasting that included a 2009 TP Pinot. Nice to see Martinborough legend Larry McKenna as part of the winemaking team. Fruit forward, idiosyncratic with a myriad of tannins, savoury notes and well handled oak notes are the hallmarks of TP. 4 separate vineyards and a very committed viticultural team who are firmly focused on producing the best soil conditions in order for the vines to simply do what vines do. The vineyard has many factors and should be viewed as a commitment to a regenerative multigenerational system. Having said that, if you are lucky enough to do a tasting there (join the TP wine subscribers club) make sure you partake in a bathroom break. There’s an Art Gallery in the hallway and rooms that would stir the soul of any Gallery owner.
