Kaihaukai

Kaihaukai Gladstone Community Pataka | Food Pantry Kaihaukai was a traditional practice that survived into European settlement.

Our Kaihaukai is located adjacent to The Wheelwright Shop, and is a free local resource where you can leave any surplus produce or packaged (uncooked) food, and similarly help yourself to whatever is inside. One local story tells of bags of peaches being gifted to a neighbouring hapu, which prompted a return gift of fish. This was then reciprocated with a gift of birds, a wild cow and some wild pi

gs. The name Kaihaukai is a reminder of the traditional practice of gifting food within our community. We will regularly post images here of what's inside. Please also feel free to use this page to connect with others locally if you have surplus produce, food or plants to share but don't have the time to get these to the pataka. (Remember, this is a public page, so DM others rather than sharing personal contact information)

Kaihaukai is a Gladstone Project initiative, handmade with local recycled materials by Greg and Ali Lang. The name Kaihaukai was gifted by Ra Smith from Hurunui-o-Rangi Marae.

Lemons, limes, pumpkin and rosemary in the Kaihaukai today; the rosemary is in a jar of water so it should stay fresh for a few days, or make a fresh cut, remove the lower leaves and keep it in water until roots appear, or poke it straight in the garden and watch it take off! (It’s the creeping rosemary, so will spread like a ground cover)
