Waikato Stud is a world-renowned, record-setting Thoroughbred nursery dedicated to the breeding, rearing and development of elite racehorses. The stud was originally purchased in 1967 by Nelson Bunker Hunt, from the United States, and encompassed 188 hectares of idyllic Waikato pasture. Waikato Stud’s modern-day reputation as a birthplace of champions began in 1993 following its purchase by Garry

and Mary Chittick. Currently owned and operated by son Mark Chittick, the Matamata-based nursery has grown to 688 hectares and has forged an undisputed record as New Zealand’s number one producer of international Group One winners. On Friday, with very, very heavy hearts, we said farewell and raised a glass to the legendary Savabeel 💚 He'd been part of the Waikato Stud family longer than George Chittick himself, and his absence will be felt deeply.

George joined the Winter Weigh In team to reflect on the incredible legacy Sav leaves behind, and what a legacy it is. To everyone who sent messages and shared memories, thank you so much 🫶

“Last year we dipped our toe in the water with a nice draft in this Sale and it went well, and I feel as though we’ve upped the quality again this year.”

“Logistically, when it comes to our numbers, we’ve decided to take the opportunity to grow different markets and we’re kicking it off with this Weanling Sale.”

“It’s something that we’d like to continue to develop in the future, whereby we don’t just target yearling sales but rather divide a crop across various markets from weanlings through to two-year-olds.”

Waikato Stud are looking forward to presenting 10 quality weanlings at the National Weanling Sale, taking place at the Karaka Sales Centre on Thursday 25 June 2026 from 11am (NZT).

Waikato Stud stallion Noverre was represented by his first winner when two-year-old gelding Hailstones (NZ) (Noverre) ran out a strong winner of a maiden handicap (1300m) at Scone on Tuesday for Annabel and Rob Archibald. Ridden by Braith Nock, Hailstones sat outside the leader before hitting the fr...
