Breeding systems in sheep ~ Part 1: Natural breeding: the baseline

This one is reasonably self explanatory 🤣
In a natural breeding system, rams and ewes are run together and mating occurs without intervention. The ram identifies ewes in heat, and successful conception depends on fertility, timing, and natural behaviour.

From there, the ewe carries and raises her lambs herself, and her performance is directly visible - conception rate, lambing ease, mothering ability, and lamb growth are all expressed under real farm conditions.

This is the foundation of most sheep breeding systems, and the benchmark we still measure everything against. Regardless of technology, these core traits remain essential in any functional flock.

Coming up 'Mini series' Breeding systems in Sheep

I've always had lots of questions about artificial breeding in sheep, so have decided to put something together explaining the different types of breeding used in sheep, how they work (the very basics), and why we’ve chosen the approach we have for our own flock.

Topics will include:

- Natural breeding
- Artificial insemination (AI)
- Embryo transfer (ET)
- ET in practice: what it changes
- PMSG and its ethics
- The trade offs of advanced breeding technologies
- Our breeding philosophy

This isn’t about telling others how they should breed. It is simply an educational tool, and explains how we feel and do things.

It’s about being clear about our decisions, our values, and the systems we choose to support.

We believe good breeding is about more than genetics alone - it’s also about fertility, maternal ability, welfare, and sheep that perform consistently under real farm conditions.

Part 1 starts tonight.

The original showman. 👑

In 2020 Caley Glen Angus made history as New Zealand's first Supreme Champion Valais Blacknose Sheep and gave Woodland Valais Stud its first Supreme title.

Angus was a sheep that played a huge part in our journey. Full of character and always keen to be in the spotlight, he quickly became a favourite both at home and at shows. True to form, he even took part in the Grand Parade, happily soaking up the attention.

We're proud to still see his influence within our flock today and grateful for the role he played in helping establish Woodland Valais Stud.

Taine Randell is back home after a busy season on the job and looking very pleased with himself. 🐏

The girls have had their turn, now it's time for good feed, a comfy paddock, and a well earned holiday with his best mate Basil. 🍃

And while we're happy to see Taine back, we're even happier our Taine isn't standing as a New Zealand First candidate! 😂

Welcome home, big fella.
