“Should be right” has probably carried New Zealand farming a long way, and to be fair… sometimes it works. But it’s also responsible for plenty of paddocks underperforming quietly for years, nutrients being applied where they’re not actually needed, and money being spent without seeing the return it should’ve delivered.
This time of year, is a good chance to slow things down and replace assumptions with actual information. Soil testing gives a clearer picture of what’s happening beneath the surface - nutrient levels, pH, where things are tracking well, and where they’re starting to slip.
Because good nutrient planning isn’t about throwing more fertiliser at a problem. It’s about understanding what your soil actually needs, then building a plan around that.
