With torrential rain overnight, everyone decided it was perfect conditions to give birth 🤦‍♀️
I went out earlier this morning and put wool overs and bread bags on the new lambs and then went back to check them a couple of hours later. These two were laid out flat on the grass and hadn’t drunk. Mum wasn’t sure about their new clothing. Some ewes take to the covers better than others but I don’t think this ewe had chance to mother the lambs, they were just instantly freezing and giving up on life. So I brought them into my shed, took their covers off and within half an hour they had a full belly and were warmed up 🐑

A day in the life of a poorly calf on our farm 🐮 This calf has been scouring and was very cold, despite having a calf cover on. This morning I brought him into the stable and under a heat lamp. He has had alternating milk and electrolytes throughout the day, AgriSea NZ Seaweed animal health tonic, natural yoghurt and a good dose of metacam. Looking marginally brighter this evening but it may be wishful thinking on my part…we will see what tomorrow brings 🐮

With a cold westerly blowing, the more exposed calf pens are a bit chilly, so “we” 😉 used some leftover roofing iron to fill the gaps between the rails and create a draft free laying space for the calves 🐮

Our calves are fed milk twice a day at the moment, around 2.5litres per feed (more like 3 for the big Charolais)…Ted’s dad has set up a submersible pump and nozzle, which makes life a lot easier… fewer heavy buckets to lift now 👌🐮

Every morning we top up the calf muesli and opticalf and clean out the water troughs. Today we disinfected the shed with Stalosan powder and added fresh shavings too 🐮
