End of an Era, Start of a Sustainable Future
Last week, we bid farewell to a loyal workhorse at McCashin’s Brewery. After nearly four decades of dedicated service, our original pasteurizer has completed its final run.
This remarkable piece of equipment has quite the history. My father Terry purchased it from a milk plant in Hobart back in 1983, though its journey began in England some 80 years ago. I still vividly remember Dad and local engineer Chris Little meticulously assembling it piece by piece, before literally building our brewery structure around it.
While this machine has served our family business exceptionally well over the decades, our commitment to sustainability means it’s time for an upgrade. The new pasteurization system we’ve installed represents a significant leap forward in our environmental efforts, operating with virtually zero water waste – a dramatic improvement over its predecessor.
This upgrade aligns perfectly with our ongoing sustainability initiatives here at McCashin’s. As Nelson’s pioneering craft brewery, we’ve always embraced innovation while honouring tradition, and this transition demonstrates how we’re balancing those values as we look to the future.
We’re particularly proud that this change benefits not just our operations, but our wider community. By dramatically reducing our water consumption, we’re doing our part to support Nelson City Council’s conservation goals while preserving our region’s precious natural resources.
Here’s to honouring our history while brewing a more sustainable future!
