Winter was the season of rest, with the produce slowly pottering away while we did bits and pieces.

But spring is here and we’re excited to get more spring and summer veg in the ground (and given how quickly our produce boxes sold, we hope you’re excited too!)

Bring on daylight savings and long evenings playing in the māra 🌀🍅

A month of highs and lows on the farm as winter clamps down on us 🌬️

We came away from the Aotearoa Growers' Hui buzzing with new information, inspiration and warm connections, only for gale force winds to rip through the market garden the next day.

Mother Nature reminded us that she was firmly in charge, and we’re thinking of all our fellow growers and farmers impacted by her wrath.

In other news, we have some quick replacement crops going in and our spring planning is underway (writing this as Morgan sits next to me, head down in a spreadsheet planning our crops).

We also have a very exciting new piece of kit arriving soon, which we will share next month - watch this space!!

We celebrated the shortest day of the year with a seasonally short meal 🌀🥕

The pumpkins, carrots, leeks, lettuce and herbs were all grown from seed in our garden, and the beef was raised in the paddock outside the kitchen window! The flatbreads were also made from scratch with New Zealand ingredients, so the whole meal was kneaded, slow cooked and roasted with very few food miles.

It’s not lost on us that we’re extremely privileged to be able to grow our own food, and we can’t wait to share it with our local community come harvest time 💚

The last gasp of autumn was bright and sunny, which meant we were able to cultivate more beds! Many of them are now home to lettuces, perpetual spinach, silver beet, kale, beetroot, coriander, carrots, broccoli, cauliflowers and strawberries.

While these veg grow over the winter, we’ve already got our heads down working on our spring crop planning! We’re also patiently waiting on the kiwifruit and tamarillos up at Laura’s to ripen so we can bring you a big harvest at the farmers market very soon 👩‍🌾🥦

MEET THE GROWERS 🌀🥬

We’re Morgan and Laura, childhood friends who reconnected when we realised we were living not only on the same road, but also due to give birth within weeks of each other!

The uncertainty of the global food security system and desire to feed our boys nutritious, spray-free produce has inspired us to breathe new life into the market garden here at Clarty Farm.

We honour this precious resource of lush, volcanic loamy soil by growing regeneratively and without chemicals, working in a closed loop where nutrients are returned to the soil and very little goes to waste.

Alongside offering seasonal harvests at our local farmer’s market later this year, we’re also excited to curate produce boxes brimming with Clarty’s finest fruits and vegetables - delivered to your door this summer.

We’re excited to be here and get stuck in. If you’re interested in eating fresh, locally grown and affordable seasonal produce, follow along! 🌞
