Daffodil Cottage

Daffodil cottage was built in the Edwardian times as part of the Garrow Farm. The Garrows were a Scottish family that landed on the Ardgowan estate back in 1885. They reared sheep in times when the fledgeling but successful business of sending sheep carcasses to England on refrigerated ships daily from Totara Estate, just south of Oamaru was operating. The farm was bought by the Hastings family in the 1930s and has been run by the family ever since. The wooden horse wagon that delivered the cream from neighbouring farms to the creamery still has the piece of cardboard “contract” outlining the sale of the wagon to the Hastings in 1938. Unfortunatly the orginal homestead built in the 1880s was demolished due to storm damage, but the Oamaru stone stables and outbuildings are still standing and in use. The Cottage has been lovingly restored and furnished to reflect the periods charming features with the orginal Shacklock Range standing in the heart of the cottage. This warmed many generations of cold fingers and toes, provided hot water for copious amounts of tea, and baked bread to sustain the hungry stomachs of farming folk. Daffodil Cottage is now available as a self contained holiday cottage, or as a detached B&B only 15minutes drive from Oamaru’s Historic Precinct, its surroundings are peacefull yet full of wildlife with birds, ducks, hedgehogs and a number of other little critters to watch and enjoy - not to mention the resident milking goats, sheep and two hens that give you fresh eggs every day! It is a single bedroom cottage, with the porch area being fit out with a single bed if needed or as a day bed with the sunnyest spot, perfect to read a book or dream the hours away. There is a composting toilet in an outhouse to fully appreciate the pasts experience and environmental friendlyness. An outdoor clawfoot bath is a quirky feature that lets you relax and unwind in natural surroundings. The name Daffodil Cottage comes from the old daffodils planted many many years outside on the road brim, the only pretty things that adorned the cottage for years as it lay unoccupied and surrounded by sheep. There are bikes available for your use to tour the beautiful natural sights around Ardgowan including the Devils Bridge Road Wetlands, gentle rolling hillsides, and snow covered mountains, and if you request a traditional picnic, you will be taken to the picnic spot with the best view on the whole farm (weather permitting).
