Milligans Food Group Ltd

Milligans Food Group Ltd Milligans Food Group is one of New Zealand’s leading suppliers and manufacturers of food ingredients, consumer food products and animal nutrition products.

Milligans Food Group, a family owned and operated New Zealand business, is one of the country’s leading suppliers and manufacturers of consumer food ingredients and products. Milligans’ subsidiary company, Milligans Feeds, specialises in animal nutrition products. Situated in Oamaru on the East Coast of the South Island, Milligans originally began operations in 1896 as a Flour Mill, 20kms west in

the small township of Ngapara. Milligans Eclipse Flour dominated the New Zealand market for more than 100 years. For the local Paton family who have owned Milligans Food Group for more than 30 years, diversification has been a strong factor in company growth. With a nod to its heritage, a new ‘Eclipse’ range was born and includes brands of Eclipse Dairy, offering milk powders and butters; Eclipse Cheese, in block, slice and grated form; and Eclipse Nutrition protein powders. Adding to their varied line-up of products, Milligans acquired the well-known Granny Fayes range in 2004, and followed that in 2007 with the purchase of New Zealand’s much loved Frosty Boy brand. Due to changes in the industry making flour production no longer viable, the milling ceased in 2016. With such a long history it was not a decision the Paton family took lightly - however, should it ever be needed in the future, they have ensured the mill remains intact. It was in the late 90s that the business had grown enough to require an Auckland base to service their North Island customers. Constant growth since then has meant a number of different moves and Milligans are again looking for a larger base as they keep up with demand. Back home in Oamaru, a third site was secured in 2017 and new facilities were built for more blending capability and bulk storage. The adjacent land was purchased at the same and is currently being developed for further processing and warehouse capabilities. Meanwhile the main Oamaru site is constantly being expanded with additional cool and dry storage, and innovative new machinery. Milligans employs approximately 70 staff, many of whom have been with the company for more than a decade - a testament in itself. There are also staff employed in Australia and America representing Milligans and its brands.
