We had a great couple of days off farm attending the New Zealand Farm Environment Trust national showcase this week. We also visited High Peak Station which was a highlight to see all the incredible things they are doing on farm.

Big congratulations to the Roberts Family for their Ballance Farm Environment National Ambassador 2026 win last night. It was an incredible showcase of New Zealand’s primary industry and the phenomenal environmental work they are doing.

Tony and Michelle Roberts of Merino Downs in Southland have tonight been named New Zealand's National Ambassadors for sustainable farming and growing.

"Never in a million years, sitting in that room today with all those amazing regional winners, did we think it would be us," Tony said.

"We are incredibly humbled. Go Southland!"

The Roberts' story is one of vision, hard work and an unwavering determination to turn the dream of farm ownership into reality.

Tonight, that journey has been recognised with the highest honour.

HEAD SHEPHERD POSITION

Matakanui Station is seeking an experienced and motivated Head Shepherd to join our team and contribute to the ongoing success of our high‑country farming operation. This is a key leadership position with responsibilities for day‑to‑day stock management, supporting station planning, and working closely with the management team to ensure high standards of animal welfare, pasture utilisation, and operational efficiency.
We are looking for someone with proven experience in shepherding roles, strong stock‑handling capability, and the confidence to take initiative in a dynamic working environment. A good team of dogs is essential, as is the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with our station team.
The successful applicant will receive competitive remuneration reflective of experience and responsibility. Comfortable housing is available on‑farm, suitable for a couple or family, offering the opportunity to live and work in a supportive rural community with access to schooling, services, and the outdoor lifestyle that Central Otago is known for.

On Saturday we attended WS Hickey & Sons 70 years of business whilst co-hosting the Royal Agricultural Show National Golden Fleece competition! It was an incredible day highlighting many amazing fleeces as well as a broad exhibition of all things wool ❤️. Congratulations to Armidale Merino Stud for taking out the Champion spot with a stunning merino ram fleece. Thank you to the WS Hickey team and especially Hayden & Rachel for your dedication to the wool industry - Brent would be proud.
