Shepherd General – Bog Roy Station, Omarama, South Island

After three and a half great years, our Jake is heading off to a new opportunity to continue his growth in the industry, which means a spot has opened up here on the team at Bog Roy.

We’re looking for a Shepherd General to come and be part of our operation on our 2,700ha hill country station on the shores of Lake Benmore, running Merinos and Hereford cattle.

This is a great opportunity for someone in their late teens or early twenties who already has the fundamental skill set needed for a Shepherd General role. If you're keen to learn, get stuck in, and build a solid foundation in the industry, this is for you.

Bog Roy Station is a family owned property with a supportive, down-to-earth team. We take pride in being top performers, looking after our stock, and creating an environment where people can grow and enjoy what they do.

We’re based in a pretty special part of the world - Lake Benmore on your doorstep, with the Alps 2 Ocean trail running right through the area. If you’re into hunting, fishing, biking, or just getting outdoors, you’ll fit right in.

The role:

You’ll be working under the supervision of Stock manager Angus, involved in all aspects of the farm.
This is a hands-on role with plenty of variety and a chance to really develop your skills.

What we’re looking for:

- A good attitude and willingness to learn
- Great work ethic and reliability
- Farm experience with a firm handle of the basic skills
- A small team of well trained dogs
- Honest, respectful, and a good team player

Idaho…

Travelled from Vegas up to Gooding, Idaho - Gundy’s old stomping ground from over 30 years ago. Spent a couple of days staying with old friends the Arkoosh’s.

Similar landscape to that of the Maniototo and Ida Valley - big country with hills in the distance, except the flats a mix of soil interspersed with areas of basalt rock. 8-12 inches of rain means pivot irrigation essential and lucerne the main pasture variety. Really similar to home, except for the Coyotes, Bear, Mule Deer, Rock Chucks, Voles, Mountain Lions…😂

Super nice to spend some time in real rural America 🇺🇸

Cruising around Kurow, Otematata and Omarama last week (with all the goodies from The Hungry Hydro to sustain me) I came across this glorious farmscape scene of Bog Roy Station set against snowy ranges and the shores of Lake Benmore.
