Kia ora ! Privileged to be raised by my koroua and kuia surrounded by our ngahere (Bush) and our rongoā I have spent my lifetime getting to know our rakau. I have crafted a collection of authentic māori made rongoā from the abundance of rakau in our beautiful valley. I also love making soaps and have a small herd of milking goats whose milk I use for my soaps. I am fascinated by our amazing plants and all that papatuānuku provides us with. Please check out my website if you want to know more about what I do.

Yesterday was the perfect day to harvest calendula, slight breeze and plenty of sunshine ☀️. Mid morning when the dew has dried. This plant is a powerhouse of healing.

It’s anti inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti fungal, antiviral a great healer for abrasions cuts and minor burns etc. For that reason it’s the other main ingredient in my Kawakawa Balm.

Just pinch off the flowers. I love the smell of calendula it is not pungent ever so subtle and the resin from the flowers is super sticky but that is what holds a lot of the healing.

At this time of year and while I’m only harvesting small quantities I just spread the flowers on some paper towels and leave in a sunny place to dry for a few days ( turning every day) they are ready to work with when they sound crisp and crunchy and the whole flower head is completely dry.

Time to unmold the candles I made yesterday. It was a chilly night here in the Eastern Bay of Plenty so these pillars spent the night in the lounge near the fire.

The sounds of living off grid. It’s been awhile since I’ve been on here to be honest life has been a biarch this last year. I’ve lost two of my dearest friends and a mokopuna in the last 10 months and just haven’t had the capacity to be able to show up on socials BUT I’m back ready to share some of the incredible life that I am fortunate to live. Today was the first day in a very long while that I’ve felt like making anything, so I started with pure beeswax pillar candles that will be available soon on my website www.soultime.co.nz

Kua kā te ahi! The fire is burning. Today marks the end of a year of teaching Mahinga Kai. Of course the only way to end our class is with a haangi and a hākari. So much goes on behind the scenes to put everything together and I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without the help of my little whānau/family especially my husband, he knows a happy wife is a happy life 😂
