Look at the jelly in that!

Rooster soup an easy, tasty and healthy way to use up those pesky unwanted roosters. We have a big pot in the fridge, pop some on the heat and you have a quick meal. Or pressure can some for long term storage.

This is just one of our easy homegrown recipes in our book 'THE SELF-SUFFICIENT KITCHEN'
available from our website (link below) and full of useful info for your homegrown home.

We didn't have a very good plum year last summer, so it was wonderful to be gifted a bag of frozen red fleshed plums a few days ago.

When making plum sauce we prefer the dark red fleshed plums. We also eat low sugar/carb so use this recipe from our book 'THE SELF-SUFFICIENT KITCHEN'.

You can add any sweetener of choice but we use stevia leaves. For longer storage it is best to use real Apple Cider Vinegar not apple scrap vinegar.

There are many plants, other than pasture, which are great feed for your animals. One of our favourites is willow, in particular the fodder willow due to its larger leaves and smaller growth pattern. It is a fast growing, hardy, bushy tree reaching 4m in height. Excellent fodder source with a nitrogen content of 2.7% dry weight similar to Lucerne hay.

Uses; fodder, hedging, erosion control, birds/bees, coppicing, hedgerow, shelter.

The willows are beginning to sprout, so now is your last chance to buy our barerooted fodder willows and get them planted, ready to burst away in growth.

🌿🌳Mad cow Lucy loves her tree prunings🌳🌿

Winter prunings are a great way to supplement feed when grass growth slows down. But make sure you know what is suitable fodder and what is not.

We have taken the hassle out of researching by creating a handbook,

FODDER AND FORAGE – Creating Diverse Animal Feed Systems in New Zealand

Now on special for just $20 plus postage.

This book is laid out as a convenient collection of plants and information to aid in the creation of diverse alternative feed systems for your livestock. Incorporating trees, shrubs, perennials and herbs into your feed systems can provide nutritious feed, medicinal support, improve digestive health and regenerate land health. Utilising traditional methods of tree hay or making tree silage can extend the function of these plants as stored feed for periods of low feed availability. This extends the production capabilities of your property and its resilience capacity.

The best way to treat walnuts is soaked in salty water over night, drained and rinsed. Then dried/dehydrated till crispy.

This method not only makes for tasty nuts but is said to remove anti-nutrients making them easier to digest.

A late harvest of yacon results in several yields.

Good tubers for eating and processing into yacon syrup.

Small, split and bad tubers for pig food.🐷

Large rhizomes for replanting.

Medium rhizomes for selling on Trade Me,

Plus yacon helps create beautiful loose soil and any tubers or roots left in the soil help feed the bacteria and boost the life in the soil.

The green tops can be used for stock fodder, though this can decrease tuber yields. The dried stems can be used as compost carbon or chopped and dropped as mulch.

We use yacon syrup as a sweetener in baked goods, desserts and to make low sugar treats. Check out how to make yacon syrup and our recipes using it in our new book 'The Self-Sufficient Kitchen' available from our website,

πŸŒ³πŸŒ±πŸ“šFodder Farm is an off grid homesteading farm in the heart of the North Island of New Zealand. We produce books, blogs and plants to help you live your best life on the land.πŸ“šπŸŒ±πŸŒ³

These are available through our online shop and selected retailers (link to our website at the bottom of this post).

But we know the cost of living puts books into the luxury range for so many people. So all our books are available through public libraries. If they are not in your local library please request they get them in.

Our latest book 'The Self-Sufficient Kitchen' is available as spiral bound from us as this makes it easier to use in the kitchen. But the ones we supply to the libraries are perfect bound (glued spine) so they look pretty on the shelves and are easier to find! See photos below for the two different books.
