π We're out and about getting ewes ready for the upcoming lambing season, as well as taking care of general animal health maintenance π
If your sheep are due to lamb soon, now is the perfect time to give them a once-over to help ensure lambing goes as smoothly as possible.
Here are a few things worth considering in the lead-up to lambing:
β
Belly Crutch
Removing the wool from around the belly and back end of the ewe helps provide a cleaner, more hygienic lambing. It also gives newborn lambs easier access to the udder and makes it much easier for you to keep an eye on things.
β
Drenching
Drenching before lambing helps reduce the burden of internal parasites, allowing the ewe to put more of her energy into growing her lambs and producing milk, rather than feeding worms.
β
5-in-1 Vaccination
A pre-lamb 5-in-1 vaccination boosts the ewe's immunity and helps pass protection to her lambs through the colostrum, giving them valuable protection against clostridial diseases during their first few weeks of life.
β
Hoof Trimming
Good hoof health is essential. Sheep with sore or overgrown feet spend more energy walking, are less likely to graze well, and can struggle to meet the increased energy demands of late pregnancy and early lactation.
