WASTEWATER DISCHARGE - WESTERN WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT - 3:50PM, 25/6

Due to high rainfall within the catchment leading to higher flows, at 2:33PM today there has been a discharge of fully treated wastewater at the Karori Stream. This is expected to surface on the South Coast and may cause the water to appear cloudy or murky.

We recommend all recreational water users to follow the advice of Land, Air, Water Aotearoa (LAWA) https://www.lawa.org.nz/explore-data/swimming which suggests staying out of the water for two to three days after heavy rain.

Due to heavy rainfall in the catchment area starting at 08:12 25/06/2026, the short outfall pipe is discharging untreated wastewater into Tarakena Bay. It is likely to be travelling around the coastline.

Check LAWA before visiting beaches along the south coast.

As you know, works are in full swing and often take up the full width of the road. We want to reassure you that we will always maintain access for emergency vehicles, and have plans in place to let them through without delay.

Some of the works taking place tonight and tomorrow make letting other vehicles through the site challenging. However, the team will always work with you to get you home as quickly as they can. If parking lower down the street isn't possible, or you have any accessibility needs, please speak with the crew member stationed at the worksite boundary to let them know. They'll work out a solution with you.

Thank you for your patience as the crews complete this important work - we don't take it for granted!

BURST DRINKING WATER PIPE - KARORI - 24/6

UPDATE 1 -

Teams are currently on site managing a leak on an old, unmarked main located on private property, which has affected only a limited number of properties.

While a full repair cannot be completed today, water supply will be restored shortly, and crews will return tomorrow to complete the work; this will require a further temporary shutdown of several hours.

The repair has been complex due to difficulty locating the leak, a secondary break that has since been fixed, and the absence of an isolation valve, however we expect the issue to be resolved during tomorrow’s visit.

Bottled water will be available to affected residents.

Our teams are responding to a leak on Verbier Road, Karori.

We are working to restore this as soon as possible.

We've had to shut off water to the area.

The properties affected are:
• 33 - 70 Verviers Street, both sides
• 77 – 109 Beachamp Street, both sides
• 16 – 22 Wights Hill Road, even side only

A great result from a repair completed on Ohiro Road on 5 June 💧

This leak was proactively found by the team who identified a spike in the minimum night flow (MNF) of the zone. MNFs trace the amount of water used overnight, when most people are asleep. If there's a spike? That's usually a sign of a hidden leak.

Following the fix, flow in the zone has reduced by 2.8 litres per second - a significant drop that highlights the impact of finding and repairing underground leaks across the network.

Night works coming to Aro Street from early July 🚧

As part of our programme to repair and upgrade ageing wastewater pipes in Aro Valley, our contractors Brian Perry Civil will begin overnight pipe relining works on Aro Street from early July (currently scheduled to start on Sunday 5 July).

📍 Location: 162–206 Aro Street
🕕 Working hours: Sunday–Thursday, 6pm–5am
📅 Duration: Approximately five weeks (25 work nights)

Because the pipe relining process takes around eight hours to complete, these works need to be carried out overnight to avoid significant daytime traffic disruption on this busy route.

What to expect:
• One lane closed at the work site, with stop/go traffic management in place
• Some noise from vehicles, generators and equipment
• Higher-noise activities, such as concrete cutting, will finish by 11pm
• Driveway access will be maintained
• Bus stops may be temporarily relocated nearby
• No parking impacts are currently expected

We know overnight works can be disruptive and appreciate the community's patience while we complete this important upgrade to Aro Valley's wastewater network.

WASTEWATER OVERFLOW - LYDNEY PLACE CAR PARK PORIRUA - 19/6

UPDATE 5 - 2:30PM, 25/6

The team have exposed both sides of the wastewater main.

Flows have continued in the network, however, no seepage surfaced from the exposed section of the main.

A CCTV inspection of the network has been completed, and the footage will be reviewed to help identify potential faults.

Parking spaces in the Lydney Place Carpark are reduced. Reserved parking has been relocated to the middle section of the carpark.

Note there has been no overflow since Friday, and any seepage has been contained within the worksite.

Action Plan:
• Safety fencing has been arranged to restrict access to the worksite.
• Our team will continue excavating around the main to locate the source of the seepage.
• We are working to mobilise our subcontractors to be on standby to assist with identifying the fault, and to undertake the subsequent repair if required.

UPDATE 4 - 10:00AM, 22/6

The seepage was contained over the weekend, with the flows being redirected to the gravity wastewater main. Mitigation measures will remain in place until the cause of the seepage has been identified.

It is suspected there is a fault on the network near the manhole chamber in the Lydney Place carpark. Our team are working to locate the source of the seepage and minimise any disruption of the investigation to the flows in the local network. This investigation is anticipated to commence tomorrow.

Note that parking spots in the Lydney Place carpark are reduced while our investigation takes place.

We will continue to closely monitor the situation on site and adjust our response as required.

Our team continues to respond to a minor wastewater seepage in the Lydney Place Carpark, Porirua.

The pump has been installed to transfer wastewater seepage from the manhole to the gravity wastewater main. The pump will remain on site over the weekend.

Our crew is on site and will continue to monitor the area throughout the weekend.

The car park is safe to access and use.

Further updates will follow.

UPDATE 1 - 9:30PM, 19/6

Traffic management has been established on the site.

The seepage has been contained.

We are currently waiting for equipment to arrive at the site. Once it is on site, we will uncover the buried manholes that have been sealed. Exposing these manholes will allow us to assess the seepage more effectively.

We will provide a further update around 11:30, after our crew has excavated the area and gained a clearer understanding of the issue.

We are responding to reports of minor wastewater seepage in the Lydney Place Carpark, Porirua.

Our teams are setting up onsite with traffic management in place. Investigations will be undertaken shortly to determine the source, the seepage is small in size, trickling into the curb and channel. Seepage socks and sucker truck will be used to contain the seepage; and signs will be placed by the team where needed.

A further update will follow tonight once our crew have excavated the area, and a clearer understanding of the issue is known.

Our team have identified a blockage on the wastewater main near 69 Percy Kinsman Crescent.

We are working to clear the blockage, and additional resources are on standby to assist with further clearing works if required.

Kia ora koutou,

Our team have responded to a report of a wastewater overflow from a manhole on Percy Kinsman Crescent, Riverstone Terraces. This manhole is overflowing into a nearby open water course, which is expected to surface from the outfall at Te Awa Kairangi / Hutt River.

It is suspected this is the result of a blockage on the wastewater network.

We are working to locate the source of the blockage and maintain the overflow.

We will provide further updates to this post as we receive more information.
