Stern Angus: Practical Performance Cattle

Stern Angus: Practical Performance Cattle Stern Angus is a 89 year old, fourth generation Fraser family Angus Stud business. Next Sale: 18 June 2026 Stern Angus Stud.

The Stern Angus stud was founded in 1937 on Motere and Tautane bloodlines in Southland by Robert Fraser, the present owners grandfather. The stud was moved to Sterndale in 1942 and went through a very successful period under the stewardship of his son Robin Fraser before the present owners James and Fe Fraser took over in 1992. It is interesting to note that Fe’s Family has a longer association with Angus cattle. Her family were shareholders in the New Zealand and Australian Land Company which first imported stud angus cattle to New Zealand in the 1860’s. An original portrait of Tillyfour Lass, one of the first six pedigree angus females imported, hangs above the living room fire place at Sterndale. Today Stern Angus stud mates in excess of 600 cows and yearling heifers. Summers are often dry with a 600mm annual rainfall. Cows are frequently grazed over neighbouring properties and further a field ensuring a strong commercial bias. Winter temperatures can get down to -12˚C with occassional snow and summer temperatures have peaked over 40˚C. The stud has enjoyed many successes including sales to $28,000 for heifer Stern Bushelle at the 1981 Angus World Forum and bulls to $37,000 together with regular semen and embryo sales both nationally and internationally. Annual winter sales are held in June comprising around 100 rising two year old bulls and spring sales of yearlings comprised of approximately 25 head.

2012 was a record winter sale with fifty three bulls ranged from $3000 to $7000 and three stud bulls to $36,000 for an overall average of $7400.

2014 was a record sale with 92 bulls ranging from $3500 to $16000 purchased by stud and commercial cattlemen throughout New Zealand. The top price was paid for a Stern Claidmohr son by the Williams family, Turihau Stud, Gisborne. Braveheart of Stern
Braveheart of Stern was a phenomenal success New Zealand wise in 2012 with over 60 sons averaging $11,000 and seven sons selling over $30,000. Sired by Highlander of Stern and from a double bred Stern Fitzpatrick cow, Braveheart is a New Zealand sensation.

Here's a wee appreciation to all that helped make our record Stern sale! To the bidders and under bidders that made Stern the largest angusnz sale of commercial bulls in the country, thank you.

To our stud breeder contemporaries that showed confidence in our program, we value your support.

To the team of agents across Hazlett, Rural Livestock Ltd, PGG Wrightson Genetics and particularly our auctioneer John, thanks! It's been a long season for you guys and we hope you can get some time away from it/us all now.

And the sale day team! Wow, we can't do it without the local team, Donald, Zac, friends and family that bring it all together! Friends that fly in, locals that know the gig year after year. It's pretty amazing really that you can join us at our most vulnerable time! Thanks.

Finally it's the time for sheep and beef to shine (once the snow and mud dries), let's enjoy the moment and do it all again next year!!

We're super excited to announce US semen sales in Rob Roy of Stern have commenced with Darrell Stevenson, Stevenson Down T Angus, Montana picking up a package and further packages available now from ORIgen!

Darrell, Director of Angus America , and part of the Stevenson dynasty comments: 'I expect him to improve foot structure, heel depth, fleshing and muscle dimension...with progeny proof, I expect him to be a multiple trait leader in the World Angus Evaluation data set.' Wow, time will tell!

Back home his EBVs suggest his growth will eclipse his illustrious sire and that his US growth EPDs will rise based on comparable US sires. We just need patience! EPD and EBV graphs below

There's a couple of genuine Transferable bulls late in the catalogue that shouldn't be missed!
Lot 90 is an easy doing R37 Son, with a beautiful smooth shoulder and great hind quarter.
And Lot 93... a meaty Cruiser Son with genuine muscle expression. He scanned well too, being well inside the top 10% for EMA and above breed average IMF. Super prospects to check out at the back of the catalogue!

A couple more feature bulls, a stylish Albert son at Lot 12 with plenty of growth, paired with top Carcase weight for the breeder finisher. Followed by Lot 35, a Tehama Testament out of one of our favourite cows. He is balanced, moderate, and with plenty of bone. He's a top pick!

13/06/2026

Here's a couple of top 5% Growth bulls now... and great matron producers, without giving away carcase merit! Lot 25 and 65 are certainly worth a closer look.

We're always keen to show off the bulls so come and view anytime before the sale this week!
