Stern Angus: Practical Performance Cattle

Stern Angus: Practical Performance Cattle Stern Angus is a 89 year old, fourth generation Fraser family Angus Stud business. Next Sale: 18 June 2026 Stern Angus Stud.

The Stern Angus stud was founded in 1937 on Motere and Tautane bloodlines in Southland by Robert Fraser, the present owners grandfather. The stud was moved to Sterndale in 1942 and went through a very successful period under the stewardship of his son Robin Fraser before the present owners James and Fe Fraser took over in 1992. It is interesting to note that Fe’s Family has a longer association wi

th Angus cattle. Her family were shareholders in the New Zealand and Australian Land Company which first imported stud angus cattle to New Zealand in the 1860’s. An original portrait of Tillyfour Lass, one of the first six pedigree angus females imported, hangs above the living room fire place at Sterndale. Today Stern Angus stud mates in excess of 600 cows and yearling heifers. Summers are often dry with a 600mm annual rainfall. Cows are frequently grazed over neighbouring properties and further a field ensuring a strong commercial bias. Winter temperatures can get down to -12˚C with occassional snow and summer temperatures have peaked over 40˚C. The stud has enjoyed many successes including sales to $28,000 for heifer Stern Bushelle at the 1981 Angus World Forum and bulls to $37,000 together with regular semen and embryo sales both nationally and internationally. Annual winter sales are held in June comprising around 100 rising two year old bulls and spring sales of yearlings comprised of approximately 25 head.

2012 was a record winter sale with fifty three bulls ranged from $3000 to $7000 and three stud bulls to $36,000 for an overall average of $7400.

2014 was a record sale with 92 bulls ranging from $3500 to $16000 purchased by stud and commercial cattlemen throughout New Zealand. The top price was paid for a Stern Claidmohr son by the Williams family, Turihau Stud, Gisborne. Braveheart of Stern
Braveheart of Stern was a phenomenal success New Zealand wise in 2012 with over 60 sons averaging $11,000 and seven sons selling over $30,000. Sired by Highlander of Stern and from a double bred Stern Fitzpatrick cow, Braveheart is a New Zealand sensation.

It's kind of special when you have relationships that endure for generations. Often it's commercial clients or properties that have been buying bulls for multiple generations, but the Fraser and Cochrane families (Delmont Angus, South Otago) have been stud partners and clients for three generations.

Rob and Jono are the grandsons of Rob and Stuart who together purchased Waitapu Governor in 1988 for a record $41,000, against strong competition from Tangihau Angus (or was it Cricklewood Angus?) for the prized bull. They are as equally passionate angus young men as their grandparents were.

What a legacy for them and their bulls!

The bulls 'Selected for Transfer' will be posted soon but here's Donald's first pick. He may be a heifer's first calf and carry all the calving ease attributes but he's no weakling! He's absolutely packed with meat along a gun barrel back which is backed up with positive fats and IMF. In fact TOP 1% for all carcase traits.
Out of a top Gisborne bred heifer he's the sort of bull that with add value to many breeding programs from Southland Otago to North Island hill country. Lot three has a lot to offer. https://pivotdesign.co.nz/ebooks/2026/Stern_Angus/

What do 110 ripping bulls do while waiting for their sale? They test out how well they're made... bulls that are built well, shift well. Anywhere.

This is the largest offering of angus bulls in the mid/south. Last year commercial bulls averaged 9k, mostly to stations across South Canterbury, Otago and Southland. There's even more on offer this year! Check them out anytime or take a peak on bidr https://bidr.co.nz/auction/5917

It's been a massive year at Stern with an exciting farm purchase in South Otago! John and his fiancee Kate shifted down in February to run the 400ha property, bringing with him stud cows and heifers.

It's a great opportunity to run the cows in a commercial environment and use virtual fencing to help knock the property into shape. Of course there's plenty to do and it will take a year or three to get there, but we're all really excited about it!

The move steps us back towards the origins of Stern in the Catlins, which is kind of neat too. Established at Tokanui in 1937, the herd has now grown to over 600 females with clients from one end of the country to the other.

Check out our sale catalogue here and videos of the bulls will be posted shortly! https://pivotdesign.co.nz/ebooks/2026/Stern_Angus/

Ok we've got our Pre Sale Video finished! These videos aren't simple, there's a bit to it for a couple low-key blokes who'd rather be working with the cattle than being in front of the camera.

The essence of it is, there's a big selection of quality bulls. We're not really about how big the after match is, that will happen anyway, we're about genuine cattle breeding.

Bull Walk this Tuesday, 19th May. Sale June 18, 12.30pm.
