A great night with the team at Argyle Welsh Finnigan. 🥃🦉

A few drams, plenty of questions and a lot of laughs. Pretty much our kind of night.

We were genuinely impressed by how willing everyone was to give the whisky a go and share their thoughts.

And perhaps the best part? Watching people who weren't sure about whisky warming to it during the tasting. 👀🥃

Meet the Whisky: Part 1 - Finding the right foundation

When we began searching for the right foundation for Laughing Owl, we weren’t simply looking for a whisky - we were looking for a partner who shared our passion for quality, craft, and pushing the boundaries of what single malt could be.

Our journey took us across the Pacific to Virginia Distillery Co. - an award winning American Single Malt whisky distillery nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, helping shape the future of the emerging American Single Malt category.

Like us, VDC believe whisky is about more than the liquid itself. It’s about craftsmanship, innovation, and the people behind every drop.

Their approach to whisky making aligned with our own vision for Laughing Owl. Their American Single Malt provides the foundation, while our New Zealand influence helps shape the character and story of the whisky we proudly call our own.

You might even notice a small nod to this partnership on our label - the initials VDC - a quiet acknowledgement of the whisky makers whose craft and innovation are part of the Laughing Owl story.

From the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia to Aotearoa New Zealand, this is the story behind what's in the bottle.

And this is only the beginning...

If you'd told us a fortnight ago we'd be celebrating two medals from two independent competitions, we might have asked you to pour us another dram.

These awards are a proud milestone in our journey and a reminder that we're creating something worth sharing.

No names. No labels. Just what's in the glass.

We're incredibly proud to share that Laughing Owl Whisky has been awarded a SILVER Medal at the 2026 NZ Spirits Awards.

Recognised in the WORLD WHISKY category, this is a milestone we're incredibly proud of as a young New Zealand whisky brand.
With more than 400 spirits entered from Aotearoa and around the world, every entry was evaluated through a rigorous blind tasting process, no brand names, no labels, just the liquid itself.

Judged by a peer reviewed panel of experienced spirits professionals, the NZ Spirit Awards are built around expertise, fairness and integrity. To have Laughing Owl Whisky recognised in that environment is something we're incredibly proud of.

A huge thank you to everyone who has shared the Laughing Owl journey with us - our Parliament members, customers, stockists, friends and supporters. Every bottle poured, every recommendation made and every conversation started helps us continue to grow and share our whisky with more people.
