Koroglen Jerseys

Koroglen Jerseys Breeders of purebred Jersey cattle. Koroglen Jerseys was the Jersey stud of Rex Brew in Koromiko, Marlborough during the 50s and 60s. Of this 45ha are irrigated.

The stud was reincarnated by his grandson, Steven Leov, when he bought his first purebred in 2001 from Barry and Betty Liddle of Lynleigh. Since then, Steven has slowly built the numbers of purebred jerseys in his herd. They now make up approximately 30% of the milking herd at the Leov family farm, Bulford, in Rai Valley. Our dairy platform is made up of 135ha of river terraces bordering the Rai r

iver. We milk approximately 300 cows in a 44 bale rotary shed. We aim for our pedigrees is to be dairy cows first and show cows second. If they can't compete in the commercial herd, they don't have a place. Our goal is to breed cows that last longer than the national average, who have good udders, temperaments and capacity and who can thrive on a grass based system in spite of the climactic fluctuations for which Marlborough is renowned. We are members of The Purebred Jersey Breed Society NZ, Jersey NZ and the Marlborough Jersey club

Finishing up replacing the collars. Glad that's over. The girls were actually pretty decent about it apart from a couple who were not keen on new jewellery 😀

Feels a little repetitive but it's rained again. Was an exciting end to a lovely evening with birthday celebrations. Two to three hour lightning storm with heavy bursts of rain.

What a season.

Pretty much every mistake we could possibly make, and every weird thing that could happen, happened this season. Crop failures left us with no summer crop, no winter crop, and far less baleage than planned. Then came floods, dry spells, teat sprayers failing, and a whole collection of challenges that seemed determined to keep things interesting.

Hopefully next season goes a little more to plan, because this one has been exhausting.

One of the real positives has been Halter. It’s been awesome, and I truly think the biggest benefits will come next spring. Instead of doing eight fences a day, we’ll have more control over pasture than ever before, while also freeing up time to tackle the jobs that always end up on the to-do list but never seem to get done.

I think that will lead to healthier cows, better pasture utilisation, improved production, and happier people. Most importantly, happier cows.

Here’s hoping the 2026/27 season is a little less challenging than the one we’ve just finished.

The photo was what we achieved today on our milking free day. We planted a fence of trees as a memorial to my old favourite cow Hasty River Key Jemma that we lost earlier this year. Now every year we should get beautiful blossom, shade for her herd mates and fruit for everyone.
