The Kauri Grove. We’ve always been keen to plant a stand of Kauri trees. A month ago we cracked into clearing the final area of blackberry infested scrub on the property, unable to get machinery in it was all done by hand with brush cutters and a chainsaw. We finally finished it last weekend with 30 Kauri planted and 20 Kahikatea in the wetland, pest protection installed and a viewing seat built to look over it in years to come.

Really strong winds here at the moment, when over the back of the property a huge gust came through with a thud on the ground with this Kahu (Harrier Hawk) around 20 meters away, completely knocked out. I’m not sure who got more of a fright, I watched it for a couple of minutes and it came around, huge claws on it. It stretched its wings out and flew back up into the thermals to look for more prey. Its wing span was close to 3 feet, really impressive to see close up.

The 25th Edition of the Tongariro Cup. After 2 years off I had the opportunity to come back as Captain of the Bains Team for the 25th Anniversary of the Tongariro Cup. The Cup is run over 2 days, 4 beats with your best fish weighed each day, double points for a Brown. Our plans were though thrown into a bit of chaos with Marlin Mark sidelined with an injury, this provided Connor Andrew with the opportunity to join the team along with myself, Unsie and Tongariro Bob, with a combined 68 years of experience in fishing for the Cup to fight it out against some awesome fishermen. We had a great first day, just in front by 300 grams, past results have shown this counts for nothing. Day 2 was though our clincher, with 3 of us landing Browns in the morning session which ultimately saw us winning the Tongariro Cup. Our team was awesome, we fished our arses off and took a few risks along the way creating some great memories and a bit of history combined with few sore heads after a sustained celebration.
