Decorating inspiration ✨ Little details make a big difference. Whether you're working with buttercream, fondant or edible decorations, choose a few standout elements and let them shine. What’s your favourite finishing touch?

Before you roll fondant, spend a little extra time kneading it until it’s smooth and pliable. It sounds basic, but it makes a huge difference.

Fondant that hasn’t been conditioned properly is much more likely to crack around the top edge, develop an elephant-skin texture or fight you while you’re trying to smooth it.

If it feels firm, work it gradually rather than immediately reaching for lots of shortening or other additives — too much can make fondant overly soft and difficult to handle.

Small prep step. Much easier covering job.

Fondant tip: those annoying little air bubbles don’t always mean you’ve done anything wrong.

They can form when air becomes trapped between the cake and fondant, or when a cake changes temperature after covering. If you spot one, use a very fine sterile pin to make a tiny hole at an angle, gently press the air toward the hole, then smooth the area again.

The key word is gently — pushing hard can stretch or mark the fondant.

What fondant problem gives you the most grief?

👁️ A sprinkle mix can be much more than a finishing sprinkle.

Pick out the larger pieces as feature decorations, use the smaller pearls and jimmies for texture, or combine several elements around a piped buttercream swirl. It’s an easy way to create a coordinated design without needing lots of separate decorations.

These Halloween mixes are a great example — one pack, plenty of decorating possibilities.

Cupcakes are such a good place to practise combining decorating techniques. 🧁

A few different piping styles, small fondant details, sprinkles and contrasting textures can turn the same basic cupcake into a whole collection of designs.

Do you tend to plan every cupcake in a set, or decorate as you go?

Sometimes the smallest decorations make the biggest difference. 🦇

Edible shapes and sprinkles are one of the easiest ways to add detail and texture to a cake or cupcake without spending hours modelling decorations by hand. Layer them over buttercream, use them around a cake border or add just a few as a finishing touch.

Halloween is a particularly fun time to experiment with them!

🎃 Halloween is a brilliant excuse to play with cake decorating techniques — and you don’t need an elaborate design to get a great result.

A simple shaped cutter can become pumpkins, bats, ghosts or skulls, with fondant or royal icing doing the rest. They’re ideal for decorated cookies, cupcake toppers and small cake decorations.

Which Halloween shape would you reach for first? 👻🦇🎃💀
