With all the hot weather the bees decide to swarm. This is how bees naturally reproduce in the wild. In spring the hive builds up so big in size that it has enough bees to split itself in half. The bees make replacement queen cells. Once those cells are capped, about half the bees leave with the old queen to find a new home. The hive is left with the rest of the bees and the queen cells, and a new queen hatches a few days later.

Damage from the native Karaka tree. I have seen this poisoning kill whole sites of hives before in a bad year. Thankfully these beehives are strong and can handle the loss of bees although it’s not a very nice thing to find.

Unfortunately it’s very hard to know what bee hives will get effected by this each year it moves around between where we have our hives located.
