Miraka Limited

Miraka Limited Learn more: www.miraka.co.nz We have one of the lowest manufacturing carbon emissions footprints in the world.

Miraka is New Zealand's, and the world's, first dairy processing company to use renewable geothermal energy, giving us one of the lowest manufacturing carbon emissions footprints that there is globally. Miraka was established in 2010 by a small group of Māori trusts and incorporations and was founded upon a Te Ao Māori worldview which placed kaitiakitanga - the care of the land, people and the env

ironment at the heart of the business. Our plant at Mokai, 30km northwest of Taupō, uses geothermal steam and because of that emits 92% fewer carbon emissions than coal-fired plants. Our annual carbon emissions savings is equivalent to taking 7,000 cars off New Zealand roads for one year. Miraka is one of New Zealand’s largest Māori export businesses with exports of more than NZD$300million. Our premium whole milk and skim milk powder, frozen milk concentrate, UHT, customised powders and frozen cream products are exported to markets around the world.

Kia ora tātou katoa | Greetings everyone,

On Monday, we shared the Miraka Board’s announcement that we have been sold to Open Country

Thank you for the messages of support.

We know the news is still sinking in across our Miraka whānau of kaimahi staff, farmer suppliers, customers, vendors and our local community.

Sudden change of this scale can bring a range of different feelings and emotions for people.

We wish to acknowledge everyone at this time.

Miraka was established upon a Te Ao Māori worldview, caring for people and our natural environment as best we can.

Our founding values, which include Integrity and Tikanga (the way in which we conduct ourselves) have always guided our conduct and will continue to do so.

They shape how we move forward through this transition and how we welcome the Open Country whānau into our community in the appropriate way, with respect for people foremost.

We remain proud of what together we’ve achieved. We are hopeful for what lies ahead of us all and look forward to working with the Open Country Dairy team on the way forward.

Thank you for your ongoing support. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa.

!!! An Important Announcement - Miraka Announces Sale to Open Country Dairy.

Kia ora tātou,

We’re sharing some significant news about the next chapter in our journey.

Miraka has announced an agreement under which Open Country Dairy would acquire 100% of the company.

The sale brings together Miraka’s high-quality New Zealand milk, established supplier base and customer relationships with Open Country Dairy’s scale, network, and global market reach.

For farmers, customers, and kaimahi staff, day-to-day operations continue as usual. Milk supply contracts remain in place, processing stays in Mokai, and service and product quality are unchanged.

Board Chair Bruce Scott says, “There is a lot to be proud of for Miraka over the past 15 years, having grown to become New Zealand’s second largest Māori-owned exporter. However, there are significant challenges that come with being a standalone regional processor operating in a global market. Under Open Country Dairy’s ownership, our Miraka whānau will be part of a strong NZ-owned network serving the global dairy market.”

Miraka will continue to operate its current name and brand in the market and will work closely with our suppliers, kaimahi, customers, key stakeholders and local community to ensure a smooth transition and long-term benefits for our community.

This is a shout-out to the Ecogas whānau for their kaitiakitanga efforts and winning a global biogas industry award!

Kaitiakitanga (care of the natural environment/resources) is one of our core values.

We partner with the EcoGas team at Reporoa, who transform food and organic waste into things like clean energy and biofertiliser, instead of it going into landfill – how awesome is that?

EcoGas won the coveted ‘AD Hero of the Year’ at UK 2025 AD and Biogas Industry Awards held in Birmingham, UK.

‘AD’ stands for anaerobic digestion. Their award recognises global excellence in AD and the biogas sector.

Congratulations Ecogas

It was an incredible honour for Ecogas to be named AD Hero of the Year at the AD & Biogas Industry Awards 2025 🌱💚

Thank you to The Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) and the World Biogas Association, and a special thanks to Future Biogas Limited for sponsoring this category.
We're proud to represent Aotearoa and celebrate the power of circular innovation on the global stage.

Today marks our 14th production anniversary!

Pictured 'back in the day' is our small team who rolled out our first consignment of whole milk powder for export on 1 August 2011.

We've stuck to our values & knitting, diversifying to create the premium UHT, frozen milk concentrate, specialty powders and frozen cream products for our global customers.

We couldn't do this without the support of our shareholders, milk suppliers, kaimahi staff, customers and community - thank you all / ngā mihi ki a koutou katoa. Hari huritau / happy birthday e te whānau o Miraka!
