Through sustainable practices,

we are protecting our planet for generations to come. Our focus is on the welfare of bees, and what we can all do as individuals to ensure they are nurtured and their safety is ensured. We look after bees by supporting groups who plant hundreds of thousands of trees; championing sustainable business practices; looking after groups who nurture our communities and need a helping hand. These are just a few things we do at Huka Honey Hive to be sustainable:

We recycle packaging and where possible have eliminated the use of plastics and non recyclable products from our packaging and daily business. We shred used coffee cups and add them to the compost. We compost organic scraps. We plant a mix of native plants and bee friendly coloured plants (yellow and blue) in our gardens. We sponsor Greening Taupō who plant upwards of 40,000 native plants each year in the Wairakei reserve and greater Taupō area. We encourage our community and visitors to learn how to support healthy bee populations. We provide fresh water for bees. We source beautiful and sustainable bee & honey based products from beekeepers and artisans who actively improve the welfare of bees. We procure over 80% of the products we sell from small family owned New Zealand businesses who make their product in New Zealand. Here at Huka Honey Hive we like to give back to our community and people in need. Each year the Huka Honey Hive team assist a number of organisations that work within the Taupo community and some further afield. We are big supporters of Greening Taupō whose objective is to improve the Taupō environment for people and native wildlife and involves undertaking restoration planting and pest control to create ecological corridors and increase the number of native birds. With collaboration from the community, Greening Taupo can create a sustainable future for our environment for generations to enjoy; increase natural heritage, protection and restoration; protect our unique biodiversity & environment; increase recreational opportunities. We believe a green environment is a healthy environment. Huka Honey Hive have been avid supporters of Greening Taupo since it was first established. We have hosted a Community Planting day where Manuka plants were planted on our grounds, and we participate in regular planting days. The story of Huka Honey Hive begins with two extraordinary people, Blair and Dawn. In 1993, they set out to build a business unlike any other, driven by a passion to do things differently. Their commitment to sustainability, bee welfare and caring for our planet has been an important part of Huka Honey Hive from the very beginning, and continues to be today. Over 25 years later, their legacy is still going strong. Together, we create unforgettable experiences for every visitor who walks through our doors. From the beekeepers out in the fields, to the team running our tours, to those selling our products and serving you coffee, every member of our Huka Honey Hive family shares the same passion for bees. This mission is the very heart and soul of everything we do at Huka Honey Hive. Simply put, it’s why we exist and why we plan to exist far into the future. Bees are integral to our whole ecosystem. Their pollinating magic brings us flowers and fruit, not to mention the golden elixir of honey. We’re passionate about doing all we can to ensure their future survival. From educating our visitors about the vital role bees play in our world, to maintaining sustainable business practices, we are committed to the welfare of every bee. We’re proud to only stock NZ-made honey – and the largest range of manuka and honey products in all of New Zealand. Part of what makes us special is that we know each of our beekeepers personally, sharing with our visitors their amazing work and the intriguing stories behind the honey they produce. Wherever we can, all of our products are sourced from Aotearoa. When we acquire products outside of NZ, we trace every single one of our suppliers to their roots, ensuring they are 100% ethically-sourced. This ethos is a part of everything you’ll find at Huka Honey Hive; all the way down to the coffee we use and the cups we serve it in. We like to think of ourselves as a family, rather than a business. Family-run and family-oriented, this is the feeling we foster at Huka Honey Hive. Every visitor is welcomed into our honey-filled world and treated as a member of our whanau. With live bee displays, activities, educational videos and more, Huka Honey Hive creates meaningful and memorable family moments. Come in summer and enjoy an ice cream whilst exploring our lush garden, filled with native fauna and bee-friendly flowers. In winter time, sit by the roaring fire, sipping on your hot coffee, tea or lemon honey drink. Whenever you choose to come to Huka Honey Hive, you’ll be met with the warmest of welcomes and a rare opportunity to explore the golden world of the honey bee. View live bees in beehives, learn all about the amazing honey bee and the importance of their role in our lives and what we can do to help them, and our planet, survive for future generations. 🍯We're buzzing into Bee Awareness Month! 🐝💛

September is all about celebrating our amazing bees and raising awareness of just how important they are to our environment. 🌿

Did you know there are 41 different species of bee found in New Zealand, with 28 of those being native to New Zealand? 🐝

Our native bees play an important role as pollinators, helping many of our native plants thrive. While they don't produce honey like honey bees, they are an essential part of our unique ecosystem.

Here are some simple ways you can help! ✨💛

MYTH BUSTER MONDAY

❌Myth: The queen bee rules the hive.

✅Fact: While the queen is the only bee that lays eggs, she isn't actually in charge! The worker bees make many of the hives important decisions, from caring for the brood to choosing a new home when the colony swarms.

The queens main role is to keep the hive thriving by laying thousand of eggs, while the workers work together to keep everything running smoothly.

Talk about teamwork! 💛🍯🐝

MYTH BUSTER MONDAY! 🐝

Myth: All bees make honey

Busted: Out of more than 20,000 bee species worldwide, only a handful make honey. Most bees live alone and spend their days pollinating plants rather than producing honey! ✨🍯
