Cacao has been cherished for thousands of years. Today, science is beginning to understand why.

Research continues to explore how naturally occurring compounds in cacao—such as theobromine and flavanols—may support healthy circulation, cognitive function and overall wellbeing.

While no single food is a miracle, choosing high-quality, minimally processed cacao allows you to experience this remarkable plant closer to the way nature intended.

At Alche-me, we believe the greatest benefits come from bringing together pure cacao, mindful preparation and presence.

Science helps us understand what cacao contains. Ritual invites us to experience it. Inspired by recent peer-reviewed research on cacao bioactive compounds, including studies on theobromine and cacao flavanols. This post is intended for educational purposes only and is not medical advice.

The story of cacao is even more beautiful than the myths. 🤎

Somewhere along the way, many of us began believing that the cacao ceremony we know today has existed unchanged for thousands of years.

The truth is more nuanced.

Cacao itself is ancient. It originated in the Amazon Basin, where Indigenous peoples lived in relationship with this remarkable tree long before written history. It nourished communities as food, drink and medicine, woven into everyday life.

As cacao travelled north into Mesoamerica, cultures such as the Olmec, Maya and Aztec embraced it within sacred traditions, rituals and ceremonies, giving it profound cultural and spiritual significance.

The modern cacao circle, however, is a much more recent expression. Emerging around Lake Atitlán, Guatemala in the 1990s, it offered a new way of gathering around cacao through intention, connection and community.

Does that make it any less meaningful?

I don’t believe so.

A practice doesn’t have to be ancient to be sacred.

But honouring cacao also means honouring its true history—its Amazonian origins, the Indigenous peoples who first lived alongside it, the Mesoamerican cultures who carried its traditions forward, and the communities who continue to share it today.

Different chapters.
One story.

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

What surprised you most about cacao’s history?

Sometimes we spend so much time searching for answers that we forget to create the space where they can actually arise.

One of the greatest lessons my cacao practice has taught me isn’t about the drink itself. It’s about what becomes possible when we slow down, become present, and truly listen.

Not every cup brings a breakthrough.
Sometimes it simply brings us back to ourselves.

And sometimes, that’s exactly what we need.

What has cacao taught you?

Still integrating the beauty of last Sunday. ✨

What a gift it was to be part of the and witness a community coming together with so much presence, connection, and heart.

I feel deeply grateful to have participated both as a facilitator and through Alche-me Cacao, providing ceremonial cacao for the festival to enjoy throughout the day.

Sharing this work alongside such incredible facilitators, dear friends, and so many beautiful new connections was truly special.

It was a powerful reminder that when each person brings their unique gifts to the collective, something magical unfolds.

Thank you for every conversation, every shared moment, every open heart, and everyone who helped make this day possible.

My heart is full. 🤎

With gratitude,
Michele

There was a time when I treated my cycle as an inconvenience.

Something to push through.

Something to ignore.

Now I try to listen.

Not every symptom needs to be fixed.
Not every feeling needs to be silenced.

Sometimes a warm cup of cacao, extra rest, nourishing food, and a little more compassion can make all the difference.

For me, cacao also creates a space to slow down and tune in — to notice what I’m feeling, what my body needs, and what emotions may be asking for attention.

Cacao is not a cure for period pain.

But it can be a beautiful ally during times when the body asks us to slow down, reconnect, and listen more deeply.

What supports you most during your cycle? 🤎
