Meet Ronnie πŸ“ our robot rooster

Ronnie lives on our website, bottom right of every page. He's the only rooster we've got (we don't sell them), and he'll answer your chicken questions any time of day, using what we've learnt rearing thousands of girls on our farm.

A few ways our customers use him:

🩺 One of the girls not herself? Tell him what you're seeing. He'll give you the at-home fix first, and tell you straight when it's a vet job.

πŸ“ When's the next pickup near you? He reads our live pickup board and works out your closest stop with real drive times.

πŸ₯š New girls home? He'll talk you through settling them in, what to feed, and when to expect that first egg.

πŸ‚ Eggs dropped off, or feathers everywhere? He knows moulting, worms, mites and the other usual suspects.

🏠 Coop, feeder and setup questions. He'll tell you what you need and which gear actually fixes the problem.

πŸ“¦ Pickup day coming up? He'll tell you what to bring and how to get them home safely.

πŸ‘‰ Find him on our website (Google Baywide Chickens) and tap Ronnie, bottom right

And if he's stumped, Alan picks it up πŸ™‚

Want good chook feed at the cheapest price? πŸ”
Here's a free tool to help. Nothing to buy, no catch.

One question we get asked all the time at Baywide Chickens is: "Where do I get the best value feed?"

We spend a lot of our day talking people through it: which feeds are good, where to buy them, and when the deals are on. So we built something to make it easy for everyone.

Introducing the Baywide Chickens Feed Finder, a free tool that shows you the best layer feed prices near you.

βœ… Updated every morning with the latest prices, before you've even woken up
βœ… Covers nearly every layer pellet and mash in NZ: farm stores, supermarkets and feed shops
βœ… Shows you stores within 10, 25 or 50 km, you choose
βœ… Highlights 2-for deals and specials, with the price per bag
βœ… Puts the three feeds we trust for our own girls at the top, with everything else below
βœ… Every price links straight to the store's website

Times are tough enough. Rather than driving around or searching every shop's website, just tap "Find feed near me" or type in your town, and you'll see where to get good-quality feed at the best price.

πŸ‘‰ How to find it: Facebook now limits how many links a page like ours can share each month, and we can't even pop it in the comments. So just jump on our website (tap the website link on our page, or Google "Baywide Chickens") and click the Feed Finder tab at the top.

It's completely free. We'd love your feedback, and if your favourite feed isn't on there, let us know and we'll add it.

Happy feeding and happy laying! πŸ₯š

Spring worming time 🌱

Warmer soil, more bugs, more scratching β€” spring is when the worm burden in a backyard flock starts to climb. The catch is you won't see it: by the time worms show up in the droppings the burden is already well advanced. What you'll notice first is quieter birds, a dull comb, and fewer eggs.

πŸ“… How often?
It depends how much dirt they're on, not what breed they are:
πŸ” On a bare-earth run, or the same patch of ground all the time β€” seasonally, about every 3 months
🌿 Genuinely free-ranging on grass most of the time β€” every 5 to 6 months is plenty
Early spring and autumn are the two that matter most.

πŸ’Š Flubenol 5% β€” the one we use
Flubenol is one of only two wormers registered for chickens in New Zealand, and the only one with a zero-day egg withholding. It covers all the common chicken worms β€” roundworm, gapeworm, tapeworm, the lot. It's a powder that goes into their dry feed for 7 days straight (worms hatch all week β€” stop early and the next wave gets through).

πŸ₯š Keep collecting and eating the eggs the whole time. No withholding at all.

One 8g bag does 12 hens for the full 7-day course. Mix it right through the feed rather than sprinkling it on top β€” that's the difference between a dose that works and one that doesn't.

🎯 Two things worth knowing
- Garlic and diatomaceous earth don't worm a flock. No evidence for either.
- A clean coop doesn't prevent worms β€” most cycle through insects and earthworms, and the eggs survive in soil for up to two years.

Grab Flubenol here πŸ‘‰ www.baywidechickens.co.nz/shop
(Bigger flock? There's a 6-bag Multi-Pack and a 600g tub on the same page.)

Questions about worming? Ask in the comments.

Mite season is here πŸ”¦

As the coop warms up, red mite go from a nuisance to a plague β€” in warm weather their whole life cycle takes about a week, so a handful in August is thousands by October. They live in the cracks of the coop by day and crawl onto the girls at night to feed.

πŸ”¦ The torch test
Go out after dark with a torch and run it along the underside of the perch and into the joints. Wipe a white paper towel along the perch β€” red smears mean mites. Other giveaways: the girls refusing to roost, pale combs, restless nights, a drop in eggs, or little blood spots on the shells.

πŸ’Š Exzolt β€” the one we use
Exzolt is the NZ-registered red mite treatment for laying hens, and it also sorts out lice, scaly leg mite and northern fowl mite. Dead easy to give: 0.1ml on a square of bread, hand-fed one per bird β€” two doses, exactly 7 days apart. No mucking about with the water trough, and you know for certain every girl got her dose. It works from the inside, so every mite that bites gets dealt with, and one course gives up to 12 weeks of protection.

🦡 Crusty, raised scales on her legs? That's scaly leg mite burrowing under the scale β€” same treatment, same course.

πŸ₯š And you keep eating the eggs β€” no egg withholding.

One 2.4ml pack treats 12 hens for the full two-dose course.

🧹 The bit nobody tells you
Treatment is only half of it β€” 95% of mite control is cleaning. Strip the bedding, scrape the perches, wash the coop, let it dry in the sun. Do it on day 2 of the course and the mites have nowhere to come back to.

These girls are looking great!

The Beginning of October flock is open for orders β€” so here's what you're actually getting, because there's a lot behind one of our birds.

πŸ” HY-LINE BROWN POINT-OF-LAY PULLETS
The same breed that supplies New Zealand's pasture and free-range egg farms. Not a hobby bird β€” a proper, proven layer.

πŸ₯š AROUND 420 EGGS IN HER FIRST SEASON
That's roughly 35 dozen from one hen. Six hens and you'll be giving eggs away to the neighbours!

πŸ’‰ REARED PROPERLY
Our birds come out of a commercial, audited rearing programme. Vaccinated against Marek's, Salmonella, Coccidiosis, Infectious Bronchitis and AE β€” from a Salmonella-free supply chain.

βš–οΈ AND WE WEIGH THEM
Our last batch came in at 1415g at 15 weeks β€” 8.8% ABOVE the Hy-Line growth target. We keep the rearing records for every batch, and we'll show them to you if you ask.

πŸ—“οΈ PICKUP IS OCTOBER
Towns and dates going up shortly. You choose your own pickup time and date as you order.

πŸ“¦ Bring a secure box or cage on the day.

They'll start laying about 3–5 weeks after they've settled in with you β€” so fresh free-range eggs from your own back yard by early summer.
