Time to give our venue a makeover π€
Many pines gotta go to let some needed light in.
The trees become mulch to feed the native trees we are going to plant soon. It also creates a fungal barrier...
Thanks heaps to those who donated plants πβ€

Biodynamics all the way β€
Yeah I am an addict and love stirring/spraying preparations π

Just putting it out there...
If anyone in our community is interested in stirring and spreading of BD500 (this is the biodynamic preparation 500) this will happen out here at Kaukau a Tara organics this afternoon (Saturday 13th)
All welcome to come and be part of it if you wanna get involved and learn a little about biodynamics in the process π
Why today? Well, things always seem to align... The prep500 turned up in the mail yesterday, moon is descending and sun moves into Ta**us (earth sign) and the ground is as moist as it possibly could be, perfect timing πβ€π

Autumn in our orchard β€
17/04/2023
As I've been busy with the infrastructure on the land all season I had little time to grow food. Not ideal I know but what can one do, we haven't found the helping hands we need just yet... and look what our kids found on a slope near our old veggie garden. Must have escaped and we had no idea those purple potatoes were growing there... This large box came of three plants and we've got a lot more π
When you look after the land, the land looks after you. Thank you mother earth! π€πβ€

True story π
14/02/2022
Waitangi weekend we had around 120mm rain and last weekend another 115mm. We never had this much rain in the last two years π€ The track into our orchard is gone due to flooding of our stream and there is no way getting the chipper down to finish off the pines now to plant more trees etc π―
This is a serious job of ramming posts and backfilling or widening the track. In any case we'll need a digger and if ramming posts loads of material too π°ππ₯

A perfect day to bottle and make another batch of my favorite kombucha, Kawabooch. Just love the long lingering kawakawa flavor.

Update on our HΓΌgelculture:
If pine is sooo acidic as people always say... explain this to me π Everything grown on our HΓΌgel looks pretty healthy and grows like crazy. The HΓΌgel is entirely build from pine logs and mulch I've made with me chipper from our existing pines using worm wee and self made biodynamic garden teas.
14/02/2021
Beautiful day to roam around the farm and check our plants
11/01/2021
The HΓΌgel had been planted out for the first time. Everything grows very well. Might be the result of the raised soil temperature as the HΓΌgel is active as! ππ±π

In winter of 2016 we purchased the land and two days after the change of ownership I started already to deal with an estimate of 8000 plus pine trees. Those trees were planted about 11 years prior to our arrival and because no body ever thinned them out nor pruned them the timber of those trees is no good for anything but making mulch to create top soil. To deal with the amount of trees we decided to purchase a man-size chipper to handle the weeds... Since our place hasnβt been occupied before everything on the land was and still is pioneerβs work.
In Autumn 2018 we found a name for our place and Kaukau a Tara Organics was born.
Our goal is to provide customers with organically grown fruit and vegetables, but also passing on knowledge by teaching our permaculture methods of growing healthy food. In our philosophy it all starts with the improvement of the soil through biodynamic approach. Furthermore we looking to host workshops in earth building, gardening, off grid power solutions etc.
Itβs the beginning of May 2020 and so far I have planted 52 fruit trees and countless natives to replace all those pines and provide our orchard with shelter. Most of our fruit trees in our food-forest to be are heritage trees.
Itβs still a long way to fulfill my vision but I enjoy the journey very much and do the work with passion ;)
