Our goal is to provide customers with organically grown fruit and vegetables, but also passing on knowledge by teaching our permaculture methods of growing healthy food.
Operating as usual
Waitangi weekend we had around 120mm rain and last weekend another 115mm. We never had this much rain in the last two years 🤔 The track into our orchard is gone due to flooding of our stream and there is no way getting the chipper down to finish off the pines now to plant more trees etc 😯
This is a serious job of ramming posts and backfilling or widening the track. In any case we'll need a digger and if ramming posts loads of material too 💰🙄😥
A perfect day to bottle and make another batch of my favorite kombucha, Kawabooch. Just love the long lingering kawakawa flavor.
And our tomatoes started to ripen up and getting massive... 🍅🍅🍅
Spread 1,200 ltr of comfrey tea around all our trees today. Feeling it... 😁
Fruit trees and soft-fruit are packed this year! Can't wait to harvest 😉
Finally dug up last seasons potatoes... Yummbo! 🤗
Work in our little citrus orchard today 🍊
Citrus doing exceptional well this season 🙏
Its been always on me bucket list... Mushrooms 🍄
Not that we haven't got any around. Heaps are growing everywhere under pines and in our native bush area, but not many edibles tho.
Thanks to David our permaculture teacher we've got now Oyster shroom inoculated wood on the land and all we gotta do now is waitn... 😊
As soon as it started to get warmer our little tiger worms in our wormfarm needed more space and food.
What a busy day today!
Yep it's definitely the busy season 😉
The birthing of my Persimmon trees 😜
Kia ora guys and happy Spring equinox! 😊
I know I know... It has been a while. I had my measure tape and sharp pencil out and have been in building mode over the winter month.
A quick look thru the orchard today gave me confidence that we are on the right path...
Enjoy the flowers 🙂
Chipped some of our pinus radiata 2.5days ago and here she starts fermenting already. What an awesome smell... 41°C already, will have to harness the energy soon 🙏
As I said, busy Autumn... 😉
The making of another garden tea. This time comfrey/seaweed
we (our pet worms and I 😆) are in the last phase of moving out the casts and giving our workers heaps more to do. I also have to build a second wormfarm soon
Made some comfrey tea infused biochar to be used in our winter garden beds
Update on our Hügelculture:
If pine is sooo acidic as people always say... explain this to me 😉 Everything grown on our Hügel looks pretty healthy and grows like crazy. The Hügel is entirely build from pine logs and mulch I've made with me chipper from our existing pines using worm wee and self made biodynamic garden teas.
Beautiful day to roam around the farm and check our plants
The Hügel had been planted out for the first time. Everything grows very well. Might be the result of the raised soil temperature as the Hügel is active as! 🍄🌱😍
Happy New Year to ya'll!
I know I know no update for ages...
Well, me has been a little busy 😉
We had a little NYE gathering which was small but very nice!
The grass is killing me right now but besides that everything else is thriving too! 😊 The orchard looks stunning and look what the kiwi fruit got for Christmas... 😜
I know I'm late for planting again... 😦 poor things! But what can ya do if you've got a hundred tasks and and only two hands...
Getting ready to plant out our Hugel for the first time 🌱❤
What an awesome day! Sunny and somewhat warm, in the sun it was at least 😊
I've been working on my composting bins and moved them around as you should ;)
They were wiggling with thousands of worms and looking very healthy!
I also gave our kiwi fruit its new home 🌱
And it's spring again... ❤
And this is how proper grown pine should look like! She is over 70 years old and will keep us and our friends warm. Thank you tree! 😊❤
Thanks Gianina! 😊
The radishes have not been genetically modified... 😂
These are organically grown radishes (Easter egg) not woody and absolutely delicious!
Kia ora friends of Kaukau a Tara Organics 😊
To wet for gardening right now, so I'm in building mode right now... 😉☔✏📐🔨
Good morning my precious 😉
Always sooo busy and almost forgot to post this... Sorry 😊
One question I do get a lot is when to plant your garlic? Well short answer is, right now! Today!!! To be very German about it 7:12am this morning 😄
Three days after full moon they say and yes ideally before the shortest day as our growing season is a bit shorter...
Kaukau a Tara got new occupants 😊
Time to harvest!
Grown totally organic with the help of worm wee and biodynamic teas, yum 🌱❤
I had no idea that Tsunami waves come all the way to us... 😂
But something or someone must have dumped this huge pile of fresh seaweed in our backyard...
Feeling very blessed! ❤ Thanks a billion 🌱
What a beautiful Monday! After a night with some good rain (25mm) the sun came out around 10am and it was a dry day to make more... Yes! More compost 😉 Had to provide more space for another box first, so I started by dropping a few more pines
The seeds of all those went into the soil 5 weeks ago. Look at'em now! Treating our food to be with worm wee, comfrey tea and lots of love ❤🌱😊
Finishing off my Autumn jobs.
I've made loads of compost by layering horse poop, cardboard, comfrey and other greens, pea straw, last year's oak leaves, food scraps and turbo charged the whole thing by introducing some tiger worms 🐅😋
In winter of 2016 we purchased the land and two days after the change of ownership I started already to deal with an estimate of 8000 plus pine trees. Those trees were planted about 11 years prior to our arrival and because no body ever thinned them out nor pruned them the timber of those trees is no good for anything but making mulch to create top soil. To deal with the amount of trees we decided to purchase a man-size chipper to handle the weeds... Since our place hasn’t been occupied before everything on the land was and still is pioneer’s work.
In Autumn 2018 we found a name for our place and Kaukau a Tara Organics was born.
Our goal is to provide customers with organically grown fruit and vegetables, but also passing on knowledge by teaching our permaculture methods of growing healthy food. In our philosophy it all starts with the improvement of the soil through biodynamic approach. Furthermore we looking to host workshops in earth building, gardening, off grid power solutions etc.
It’s the beginning of May 2020 and so far I have planted 52 fruit trees and countless natives to replace all those pines and provide our orchard with shelter. Most of our fruit trees in our food-forest to be are heritage trees.
It’s still a long way to fulfill my vision but I enjoy the journey very much and do the work with passion ;)
