🐄 Back to Body Condition Scoring (BCS) training!

This week, we had the opportunity to get back into our BCS training, with Hanneke van Kooten sharing valuable insights into why monitoring body condition is so important for dairy herds.

Body Condition Scoring is a practical tool that helps farmers assess their cows' body fat reserves, make informed management decisions and support animal health, wellbeing and milk production.

Understanding your herd's body condition can make a real difference when planning ahead and making decisions throughout the season.

A big thank you to everyone involved!

Wishing you all a wonderful long weekend! Stay safe, enjoy the break and we'll see you on Tuesday!

Coccidiosis in calves

Coccidiosis can affect calf health, growth and performance, particularly when environmental conditions allow infection pressure to build.
Recognising the signs early and understanding the risk factors are important when it comes to managing the disease and reducing its impact on your calves.

Our latest article covers the signs to watch for, common risk factors, prevention strategies and treatment options, as well as when faecal testing may be useful.

Is your herd on track? 🐄

With so much happening on farm at this time of year, getting the basics right can make a real difference to your repro results.

In our latest article, Anexa vet Margaret Perry-Hallam looks at some of the key areas to keep an eye on during mating, including non-cycling cows, nutrition, lame cows, heat detection and submission rates.

If your submission rates aren’t where you want them to be, understanding which cows are falling behind and why can help you decide what action to take before valuable time is lost.

Get more from your wearable data this mating season

Wearables can tell you much more than which cows are on heat. Used alongside good stockmanship and reliable records, the data can help identify patterns, flag potential issues and support better-informed decisions before and during mating.

In our latest article, Kirsty Ashcroft, Veterinarian and InCalf Adviser, shares practical advice on making the most of your on-farm wearable data – from monitoring cycling patterns and interpreting heat alerts to identifying cows that may need a closer look.

The real value of the technology lies in turning the data into good management decisions.

Calving is done, but the nutritional pressure on your cows isn’t. 🌱

Early lactation brings high energy demands at a time when feed intake is still catching up. Add the transition to spring grass, changing weather and supplement stores running low, and there’s plenty to keep an eye on.

Getting nutrition right now can make a difference to body condition, milk production and reproductive performance later in the season.

Will lame cows be late cows?

Possibly. Lameness doesn’t just affect how a cow walks. It can affect how much she eats, her milk production, body condition and, ultimately, her chances of getting back in calf.

And the impact can start before the lameness is obvious enough to detect.

As mating approaches, early detection and treatment can make a real difference in reducing the impact on both production and reproductive performance.

So, what should you be looking out for, and what can you do to reduce the risk on farm?
