The journey of a sale bull is a long one. From mating decisions right through to catalogue day, it’s nearly three years of selection pressures, always with the commercial farmer front of mind. The passion and love for this industry are what make it never feel like ‘work’.

This year’s sale bulls have just been through their final assessment – The Bull Fertility Evaluation. Lucas Reina from Tararua Breeding Centre travels down every year in March to complete this for us.

Bull fertility is an incredibly important factor to be considered when selecting a bull for mating. Which is why we opt for a test which collects the bull by an Artificial Va**na and evaluates their libido (eagerness to mate), mating ability, pe**le soundness and semen quality (motility and morphology).

Please be reassured that this is an animal welfare friendly assessment, and the in-season teaser cow is not served. We believe it is an invaluable management aid in confirming the breeding soundness of our stud bulls prior to sale.

Out of 53 bulls (Angus & Herefords) tested, 1 Angus bull failed on pe**le soundness. Although his semen quality passed, he has ultimately been cut from the sale. This would not have been picked up if he was evaluated by using the electro-ejaculation technique.
So, you/we can be confident in what we are putting out in the ring and that they are fit for purpose.

Introducing TED, our 2023 born keeper bull. TED is sired by 1998 Australian born breed influencer Booroomooka Theo and out of herd donor MF2677, back to herd matriarch MF1557 (still active at 14 years old).
TED is currently out working with a mob of Angus heifers.

This year's Hereford calving is nearly complete, and we are very pleased with the results - especially those from our AI program using Kairuru Polled Herefords Umaga 318.

We were fortunate to secure semen from the McDonald family in Reporoa last year. Umaga went on to sell for an impressive $69,000 at their 2025 R2 sale — a real testament to his quality.

We had a 93% holding rate on our mixed-aged synchronised program. Great Semen!
