It’s chestnut season!

I know we’ve been real low key about it this year. Just quietly doing our nutty thing over here in the corner. But honestly, our market garden (Frog Song Farm) has grown so much this year there really hasn’t been a lot of time or energy left over for chestnutting.

But we do love them so very much and we love sharing them with our community. So we are doing a short little burst of roasted peeled chestnuts at freshlink grocer - check the freezer!

These little baby’s are so good fried up in olive oil and salt or thrown into your winter stews at the end of cooking. Truely the sweet sweet taste of autumn.

Get amongst it while stocks last.

Happy autumn everyone.
The time to gather nuts has arrived.

We are so grateful to the Blennerhasset and Feint families for having us back in their beautiful orchards again this season.

Last year was the end of an era with the death of the tree-planters on both properties. Their passing reminds us of the foresight of tree croppers. People who plant trees for future generations to yield benefits from.

If everyone thought like this imagine what a bountiful forest ecology we would live in.

So with thanks to these hardworking people we are harvesting a modest stash of nuts this season

We had our first roast at the Arrowtown Autumn Festival yesterday and will be at LUMA in Queenstown at the end of may.

We have opened our online store (link in bio) for a month or 2 of online sales - mail order around the country and home delivery in luggate, Wānaka and Albert town.

It’s good to be back and bringing these autumn foods to the people for our 11th season!

RIP Jill Blennerhasset, Jeffrey Feint and John Blennerhasset. 🌳🌰🧡

Introducing an exciting new product in the Village Nuts journey.

Activated Caramelised Walnuts

A recipe I picked up from The Little Bird book Unbakery.

We use Meyric walnuts which we hand harvested from Narrandera Farm, Mt Barker (Wanaka). They are spray free, and uncertified organic. We harvested them in April, washed them, cured them, cracked them out, soaked them for 6 hrs, rinsed them, then dehydrated them at 50c for 24hrs in coconut sugar/rapadura, salt and cinnamon.

There’s a lot of love gone into these wee beauties and you are going to taste it. So crunchy and fresh and YUM.

Perfect for platters, fancy granolas, dessert toppings and a delicious healthy treat.

You can order them now on our online shop for Thursday’s dispatch (link in bio).

So why go to all the trouble of activating and dehydrating fresh raw nuts? Nuts are actually a type of seed. They contain enzyme inhibitors and phytic acid which prevents them from sprouting before spring in nature but which also makes them difficult for our bodies to breakdown and digest. Soaking them initiates the sprouting process which removes these compounds and dehydrating brings them to an ultra crunchy state.

Can’t wait to share them with you...

Today I’ve been schooling up on fungi foraging with Peter Langlands and fungi cookery with Jackie.

So good to grow the repertoire of forest and forest adjacent foods. And I love how these 2 autumnal foods sit so well together on the palette.

Great workshop - if you ever get the opportunity grab it!
