Lupin (botanical name, Lupinus) is a genus of plants with purplish-blue flowers belonging to Fabaceae, the legume family, which also includes soybeans, chickpeas, lentils, and peanuts. Largely grown in the Mediterranean, South America, and Australia, lupini beans have been highly valued for over 4,000 years. Ancient Egyptians cultivated white lupin (Lupinus albus), while pre-Incan civilizations developed different species (Lupinus mutabilis) in the region now called Peru.

Large, round, and flat, lupini beans somewhat resemble fava beans, while their firm, silky texture is similar to edamame. Their taste is savory and a bit nutty.
