Northwind Farm

Northwind Farm A pictorial adventure of the development of our farm. Situated beside the Tauherenikau River, North Wind farm is 64 ha of river flats in two terraces.

The lower river flats are dotted with ancient Kowhai trees that are a haven to Tui in the spring. My wife Jo and I are involved in dairy farming, we have been 50% share milking, at first with 430 cows, now 800 cows on South Featherston Road since 2001. We originally bought 22 hectares beside state highway 2. Later on we purchased a further 42 ha from a neighbouring a horse stud. With careful lan

d stewardship and over time we plan to create a beautiful farm that provides a modest income. We want to bring back the native birdsong to the area by enhancing the biodiversity on the farm and protecting what little native bush there is left. Over time you will witness North Wind pass through the seasons with storms and drought as well as the good times of plenty in the spring and summer. At the moment North Wind farm operates as a support farm for the share milking business growing young replacement stock. We plan to build a home on North Wind and eventually change to a new lifestyle less demanding than dairy farming.

For a long time we have had a dodgey walking bridge over this stream. 70 tonnes of river rock later and a bit of huffing and puffing we have a lovely little culvert crossing. Theres still a bit of tidying up to do, but at least the stock and us can get over the stream without getting our feet wet now.

Winter has past thank goodness. June and July were pretty good with not to much rain. The first part of August was very cold and icey. Winds from the Antarctic swept in from the south east and held us in an Icey grip.
We have had some big winds of late with one large tree blown down and 3 smaller ones.
With spring now getting going the first round of fertiliser is on and its time to grow grass. Theres 161 hungry rising 2 year heifers on the farm eating everything we grow. Mating starts for them next month.
The horses like there new stable and yards. It's good to have somewhere for them to shelter and a place to handle them.
Tree planting is mostly complete for this year. Frosts and hares have killed a number of trees.
