Welcome to Asian Pacific Festival, please come along with your friends and family and pop in “Cambodian Zone” in cultural section to have some Khmer dessert and learn about Cambodian culture and Khmer language 🇰🇭❤️

First Asian Pacific Festival, celebrating culture, food, and Lunar New Year

The Multicultural Council of Rangitikei Whanganui is organising it’s first Asian Pacific Festival ever held in the Whanganui region. Taking place on Sunday, 1 March at Keith Street School, this free, family-friendly festival will also celebrate the Asian Lunar New Year, inviting the wider community to come together for an exciting day of culture, connection, and shared experience.

At the heart of the festival is the Asian Food Walk, where visitors can explore an irresistible range of authentic flavours. From sweet soy barbecue to spicy pad thai, juicy dumplings to freshly prepared sushi, rich Sri Lankan curries to Indonesian nasi campur, and finishing with ice cream or bubble tea, there is something to satisfy every craving.

Please visit our page for Food Vendor Spotlights and to discover our fabulous vendors’ must-try best sellers. A $50 Festival Voucher Giveaway is also currently being promoted on the page. Simply find the giveaway post and follow the instructions to enter the draw.

The festival will present a full programme of multicultural stage performances from 11am to 3pm, offering audiences a dynamic showcase of music and dance.

Highlights include traditional Japanese Soran Bushi, a powerful fishermen’s dance originating from Japan’s northern coastal regions, performed by a Japanese group from Palmerston North.

Audiences will also enjoy a Chinese P**a and Guzheng string ensemble from Auckland, featuring instruments with histories spanning thousands of years and reflecting the depth of Eastern musical heritage. We appreciate the commitment of performers travelling to Whanganui to share their culture with the local community.

Another standout feature of the Asian Pacific Festival is the introduction of Cultural Zones. Inspired by large-scale Auckland events this immersive format allows visitors to engage closely with culture beyond the stage. On the day, the public can explore Cambodian, Japanese, Chinese, and Kiribati Cultural Zones, featuring cultural displays, hands-on craft activities, and opportunities to learn directly from community cultural experts. Adjacent to the Cultural Zones will be a Kids Zone, complete with a bouncy castle.

Adding further depth, the International Art Exhibition of Zhen Shan Ren will be presented in the region for the first time, offering insight into timeless Eastern wisdom through beautiful and inspiring artworks.

The festival will also feature sustainable lifestyle, eco fashion, and artistic craft stalls, highlighting ethical design, creativity, and environmentally conscious living.

We would like to sincerely thank the festival’s funders — Whanganui Community Foundation, Lotto, and Community Matters — as well as supporters Whanganui District Council, Cancer Society, and Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre, and partners Keith Street School and Women’s Network. This festival would not be possible without your support.

Everyone is welcome to enjoy this celebration of culture, food, and community. Free Entry — bring your picnic blanket and make a day of it on the lawn. Scan the QR code and follow us on Facebook for updates. 10am- 4pm
