Its been another busy week on the farm, 400 more asparagus crowns were planted to go with last years 800. As the years go so fast it won't be long until we are having a major crop of spears each spring.

Did you know that conventionally grown spinach regularly tops the Dirty Dozen list for chemicals found on the product.

MPI's 2022–2023 Food Residues Survey found spinach samples exceeding permitted pesticide residue limits for:

Bifenthrin: An insecticide.
Cypermethrin: Another insecticide.

Our organic bagged spinach available at the Whanganui River Markets tomorrow is just planted in living soil, grown, washed in water, dried and bagged. Taste the difference!!!

It was a busy weekend on the farm with 1000 native trees and shrubs planted bordering the market garden. In true permaculture fashion it accomplishes several things not least of those will be beauty. We very much look forward to watching it mature into a diverse oasis. Huge thank you to family and friends who pitched in and helped, we couldn't of done it without you 😍🌳🌲

A couple of new additions to the table this week at the Whanganui River Markets. The Jersey Bennes new season potatoes are ready, harvested this morning and so delicious. Cucumber plants are much like us and really don't like the cold. So this week was planting time for the first wave or this fruit. Because all the cold snaps have finished now 😂🤣 . Soil temp in the greenhouse is coming up nicely so all going well we will have cucumbers on the table in December. Still too chilly for the capsicum and chillies.

Why does our salad mix stand out above the commercial supermarket bagged stuff?
Pretty simple, its grown in soil where it naturally works with soil life to produce a leaf thats bursting with nutrients and complex carbohydrates that don't break down within a few days. As apposed to being grown in running water and force feed Nitrogen.

We have another range of tomato plants this week, Some lovely varieties. They flew off the table last week. Varieties are
Berkley Tie Die - large Heirloom tomato with amazing striped green/orange skin
Speckled Roman - A lovely striped orange and red Heirloom .
Leo of casino - A heirloom tomato that looks like your ordinary tomato but flavour flavour flavour!!
Black Krim - another lovely heirloom with a black/purple skin and lovely flavour
Sassari - A hybrid cherry tomato bred for high disease resistance and prolific cropper - We planted these 3 weeks ago and they are already waste height and flowering!!!

And of course we will have a lovely range of fresh organic veggies on the table tomorrow a the Whanganui River Markets

"When will you have potatoes again?" is a question we get asked a lot. Here is our first row of Jersey Bennes bursting out of their warm cloche. In a couple of weeks we will have a look what's going on underneath (no promises :) ). New potatoes are one of things we look forward to most in spring.

This week at the Whanganui River Markets we will not have tomatoes 😄 But we have a lot of excess tomato plants available...

This week at the Whanganui River Markets we will not have tomatoes 😄 But we have a lot of excess tomato plants available. We will be offering different varieties each week, this week: Black Krim - A lovely big dark skin Tomato, Pink Brandywine - A Pink skinned large Tomato with arguably the best tasting fruit. And Gloriette - A hybrid commercial standard red variety that is bred for disease resistance and prolific production. And of course we will also have some veggies :)
