A message to all that supported us.....
After six seasons, I’ve stepped away from my role as Crew Chief of Waka Kai, marking the end of a journey that began at the very start of the project.
From day one, I was involved as Waka Kai took shape and began operating. Over the years, the operation faced significant challenges — including the COVID-19 shutdowns, multiple cyclones, and widespread flooding across the peninsula. Throughout these events, the focus remained on steady leadership, practical solutions, and looking after both people and kaupapa.
For me, leadership was never about recognition, but about turning up, making the hard decisions when required, and carrying responsibility through uncertain times. I’m thankful to the crew and all those who supported Waka Kai throughout its journey.
As the first concept of its kind in the world, Waka Kai has been something special to be part of. My final task was to return Waka Kai from its Auckland workshop and complete the season — a milestone now achieved.
I leave proud of what has been accomplished and wish the future operator or operators all the best as Waka Kai moves forward.
