Not all honey tastes the same, because not all honey comes from the same place.

Mānuka flowers first. October, November, in the coastal highlands. We harvest that before the pōhutakawa even opens. Then December comes, the coast lights up red, and we go back in for the pōhutakawa.

Rewarewa is deep in the central Coromandel ranges, away from everything. That one we harvest at the end of the season.

Three honeys. Three parts of the same peninsula. And no two seasons are exactly alike.

Mānuka: earthy, aromatic, bitter mineral finish.

Pōhutakawa: buttery, creamy, a little salty.

Rewarewa: rich, toffee, caramel.

Every year the world buys around 10,000 tonnes of manuka honey. New Zealand only produces around 1,700 tonnes. Do the math.
That means most of what’s being sold as manuka honey simply isn’t.
Part of the problem is where honey ends up being packed and sold. Honey can be sourced from multiple countries, blended, and then labelled and sold in places with little to no rules around what can actually be called manuka. No testing requirements, no standards, no accountability.
So how do you know if yours is real? In New Zealand there’s a science based standard called the MPI test. It checks for 5 specific markers that only occur naturally in genuine NZ manuka honey. If your honey can’t pass it, it’s not manuka.
At 309 Honey every batch we produce is tested against this standard. We share the results openly because we think you deserve to know exactly what you’re buying.
Real manuka comes from New Zealand, is packed in New Zealand, and comes with proof. Everything else is a gamble.

Why we use smoke, smoke masks pheromones that bees put out of they’re feeling aggressive. It’s an essential part of gentle beekeeping for the beekeeper and the bees.

Watching a big swarm settle on a tree. Once it landed we shook it into a box. Now it’s all tucked up warm and dry for winter 🌧️🐝

Does your honey have glyphosate in it?
Most people don’t know to ask. No one wants to eat Roundup and most mānuka leaving New Zealand is tested for it before bulk buyers will even touch it. It’s become industry standard.
Ours tests essentially undetectable. Not because we’re particularly clever , because our bees are foraging remote Coromandel bush, kilometres from any spray.
Geography does the work.
