Together, Nati Gordillo and Alberto Sommaruga sowed their life project 25 years ago. They acquired their property in Azpitia and planted grapes to alchemize into pisco.
It has been three months since Nati passed. Fighting back emotion, Alberto assures us he wants to continue. “It’s what Nati wanted,” he says. He insists that, regardless, his grapevines demand care.
On Monday, his annual pruning campaign began, arriving many weeks early due to the warmer temperatures brought on by this year’s “super” El Niño. Pruning prevents the vines from prematurely flowering, though even still, we are likely looking at a late-February harvest, he tells us. The weather phenomenon is also creating uncertainty around yields.
Pisco is a farm-to-glass, vintage spirit made possible by growers and artisans who distill fruit that requires a year’s worth of coaxing and care.
PiscoLogía will continue making beautiful pisco in honor of our partner, Nati, who was dedicated to quality and taste above all.
Pro tip: I’d recommend stashing a bottle or two with her signature on it.
