This is the Surinam cockroach (Pycnoscelus surinamensis). This common burrowing species is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions, typically identified by its shiny black head-shield and brown, leathery wings.

Habits: They are primarily plant pests that live in soil, leaf litter, and under mulch. They occasionally wander indoors but prefer moist, outdoor environments.

Reproduction: In many regions, populations are composed entirely of females that reproduce via parthenogenesis (cloning) without the need for males.

The Surinam cockroach is considered a plant and garden pest, but it is generally not a household pest.🏑 Inside the House (Not a Major Threat)

Harmless to Structures: Unlike common infesting roaches (like German or American cockroaches), they do not chew on household items, structures, or contaminate indoor food supplies. Low Survival Rate: Houses are typically far too dry for them. If they wander indoors, they usually die quickly from dehydration. They are most commonly brought inside accidentally in the soil of potted house plants. In the Garden & Greenhouses (A Real Pest)

Root and Stem Damage: They are avid burrowers that hide underground during the day and emerge at night to feed. They chew on plant roots, shoots, and young stems, which can severely weaken or kill garden plants, lawns, and greenhouse crops.

Rapid Reproduction: Because they reproduce clonally without needing a mate, a single female can quickly multiply into a massive outdoor colony if left unchecked.

How to Prevent and Control Them: Check Potted Plants: Always inspect the soil of outdoor plants before bringing them indoors.

Manage Moisture: They thrive in damp areas. Avoid overwatering your garden and fix any outdoor leaks. Thin Out Mulch: Keep heavy wood mulch a few inches away from your home's foundation to remove their preferred hiding spots.

Farm Friend or Foe?

This is the Asian Spotted Tortoise Beetle (Aspidimorpha miliaris), a member of the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae). This fascinating insect is easily recognized by its transparent, dome-like outer shell (elytra) which exposes the distinct black spots and vibrant orange coloration beneath.

These beetles typically feed on the foliage of plants in the Convolvulaceae family (such as morning glories and sweet potatoes). They are widely distributed across tropical Asia, including the Philippines, and are known for their ability to slightly shift color depending on humidity and age.
