The pigeon eye sign theory is a controversial, largely unscientific method used by some breeders to evaluate a racing pigeon's potential by examining the iris, pupil, and surrounding rings for specific colors, textures, and structures. Proponents believe certain eye characteristics—such as a small, reactive pupil and a thick "circle of adaptation"—indicate superior breeding ability, stamina, or intelligence.

Key aspects of the theory include:
The 5 Circles: Enthusiasts analyze the pupil (size/reflex), circle of adaptation (inner ring), circle of correlation (middle ring), iris (color/granulation), and the outer/vermian ring.
Breeding vs. Racing: Specific markers, such as a "wobble" in the iris or rich pigmentation, are believed to distinguish superior breeders, while other signs are thought to indicate speed or long-distance capability.
Controversy: Many top, modern, and scientific breeders dismiss this, prioritizing performance (race results) over physical traits.
Scientific Validity: Scientists generally do not support the theory.

What Enthusiasts Look For:
Small Pupil: Indicates focus and intelligence.
Rich Granulation: High-density, three-dimensional texture in the iris is considered a sign of a strong breeder.
Wide Adaptation Circle: A thick, dark, or serrated inner ring is viewed as a sign of high-quality, in**ed, or "prepotent" birds.

While some believe it helps increase the percentage of quality birds in a loft, others argue that top performers can have various eye types, and that only the "basket" (actual racing) proves a bird's worth.
