KAWAWA ANG MGA FARMERS

Farming in the Cordillera has always been difficult, but recent challenges are making life even harder for vegetable farmers in the region.
One major problem is the rising cost of fuel.

Farmers rely on trucks to bring their vegetables from remote mountain farms to trading posts and markets across the country. When fuel prices increase, transportation costs also rise, leaving farmers with smaller earnings from their harvest.

At the same time, frost—locally known as andap—has recently damaged vegetables in some highland farms. While frost may look beautiful to visitors, it can burn leaves and destroy crops like cabbage, lettuce, and carrots overnight. For farmers who have spent months caring for their crops, the damage can mean losing an entire harvest.

With higher production costs and unpredictable weather, many Cordillera farmers are carrying a heavy burden. Despite this, they continue to work every day to supply vegetables to markets across the country.

Their resilience keeps the food supply going—but it also reminds us how important it is to support the farmers who feed the nation.
